Netflix’s major One Piece live-action update means that season 3 is now way more likely. One Piece season 2 was confirmed on September 13, 2023, when Netflix released a video in which Eiichiro Oda teased the arrival of live-action Tony Tony Chopper. Now, Oda has confirmed which arcs will be covered in the next season of the live-action series. As expected, One Piece season 2 will start with Loguetown, which is technically part of the East Blue saga but was left out of season 1. Then, the series will properly enter the Grand Line with Reverse Mountain.

Oda’s message to One Piece live-action fans also mentions Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island, all of which are part of the Arabasta saga in the manga. However, one noticeable omission was the Arabasta arc, which refers to the final portion of the Arabasta saga. Drum Island ends with Chopper joining the Straw Hat pirates, with the crew heading to the Kingdom of Arabasta to help Princess Vivi save her country from Crocodile and the Baroque Works amidst a revolution. While not getting Arabasta in season 2 can be frustrating, this suggests One Piece has a bright future on Netflix.

The fact that One Piece live-action has chosen not to cover Arabasta in season 2 indicates that the producers and Netflix are confident in the show's future. Leaving such a major arc out of the second season means that One Piece is setting the stage for an even bigger season 3 that would cover the war for Arabasta. One Piece season 3 is not confirmed as of the writing of this article, but it’s unlikely Netflix would be comfortable revealing this far ahead that Arabasta won’t happen in season 2 if conversations for another season weren’t happening.

The decision to save Arabasta for a potential third season is surprising, particularly because One Piece season 1 covered all of East Blue. While the Arabasta saga is longer than East Blue, many assumed that season 2 would compress all of the arcs into eight episodes just like the first season had done. However, with season 2 stopping at Drum Island, it is clear that One Piece wants to take its time and let the Arabasta portion of the story shine in its season. Whether season 3 would also include Sky Island is difficult to say.

Therefore, One Piece has the potential to be one of Netflix’s biggest shows for years to come, even more so if season 2 is as successful as the first season. Saving Arabasta for season 3 is risky, but it might pay off.
