One Piece's Creator Quietly Confirmed the Live-Action Series Won't Last Forever

5 hours ago 2

The crew of the Going Merry has sailed into the Grand Line, and as of season 2's finale for the live-action One Piece show, the currents are strong and the winds are fair. Season 3 is already imminent, with even its key villain teased showcasing Joe Manganiello in his cigar-chomping glory. But perhaps unsurprisingly, Netflix's One Piece won't last forever.

One Piece Live-Action Cast Hint at Specific Arc the Series Hopes to Reach

One Piece started in earnest with season 1 adapting the bulk of the East Blue Saga, with season 2 reaching roughly chapter #155, this impressive pace is merely a dent in the manga's monolithic ~1100-chapter run. With future seasons releasing at a significantly greater pace given season 3 being already in production, Mackenyu confirmed Oda has a destination in mind.

Are you King of the Pirates — or lost at sea?

↻ SET SAIL AGAIN

Asked whether there was anything the cast had read or heard that made them excited to get back into season 2, Mackenyu stated:

"I do, and it's from the great Oda-sensei. He has a vision to where he wants to where he wants to end – not "end", but where he wants us to take the live-action to. We all know about it, we all know where he wants to go up to. There's a specific arc he wants us to go up to, before we're 50."

-Mackenyu

Mackenyu is careful in this moment not to say too much, as they're clearly meant to keep the planned arc for the live-action series to reach. While they're coy about it, it's clear the series, especially its live-action cast, has an expiration date before the actors age out of their roles.

Netflix's One Piece Has One Good Arc for a Natural End

While optimistic for the show's future, essentially placing hopes higher than those for Stranger Things' near-decade run, One Piece would make a good deal of sense to end its live-action show after the Marineford Arc. The full crew of Straw Hats as everybody knows, including its four future additions, would be fully assembled for this iconic, climactic saga.

Marineford features a culmination of the key players shown so far, the crew assembled, as they move to rescue a pirate near and dear to Luffy's past. Featuring current and future Emperors, it was the most ambitious conventional conflict in One Piece history ahead of the time-skip, ending with a proclamation that the famed eponymous treasure is, in fact, real.

While the arc ends in immense tragedy, it also sparks a hopeful note for the Straw Hats as they prepare for the days ahead. Any arcs beyond this point are post-timeskip and remarkably ambitious, from the undersea realm of Fishman Island's arc, to bulky sagas like Dressrosa and Wano.

While Mackenyu backpedaled on saying where the live-action series would "end", choosing to say "go up to" instead, at best, any adaptation beyond even this point would likely need its roles recast, save maybe Mikaela Hoover and Martial T. Batchamen. But even this would be a remarkable achievement, roughly seven seasons if not more, a welcome sight for fans indeed.
