As Westerns have had their biggest boom in years, the inclusion of different perspectives has been key in modernizing the genre for today's audiences, and Netflix's new adaptation of a classic is breaking ground even after 50 years into its TV history. Although viewers have become accustomed to the world of Yellowstone defining what a Western looks like in 2026, new contenders are stepping into the genre, including Netflix's adaptation of Little House on the Prairie. The series, which released its eight-episode first season on Netflix July 9, adapts Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic novels and their 1970s hit TV counterpart.

Bringing a story of white settlers venturing west in 2026 isn't as easy as it seemed in the past, especially with the scope and understanding of a modern-day perspective. Understanding that the pioneers were moving through land that wasn't theirs to claim, now more than ever, brings a different tone to the way that we perceive Westerns, and changes the way they tell their stories. Rather than shying away from this narrative, the way that the original TV series seemed to in most moments, Netflix's Little House on the Prairie adaptation confronts it head-on in a nuanced, interesting way.

Little House takes the opportunity to not only delve into the perspective of the Ingalls' pioneer perspective, but the indigenous families that are impacted by their settlement. In a bold move, Little House on the Prairie breaks ground with its inclusion of Osage stories, ensuring all voices are heard.

Little House On The Prairie's 2026 Remake Recaptures The Original's Magic

Little House on the Prairie is a unique entity in the way the nostalgia around it consistently feels positive. The series seems to glow in the minds of its long-time fans, and because of that, there was a lot of fear and trepidation about adapting it in a way that felt right. Michael Landon, who brought a sense of magic to the role of Pa in the 1970s series, was behind so much of Little House that making it without him often rubbed viewers the wrong way. Thankfully, Netflix's adaptation recaptures the show's original magic and quickly builds on it.

By broadening the universe of Little House, moving beyond the stories of the Ingalls and into the rest of the town of Independence and its surrounding area, the series is able to break into parts of the story that feel new, fresh, and necessary. One of the most important stories being told in the Netflix series comes from the Osage perspective. The Ingalls quickly meet Mitchell (Meegwun Fairbrother), White Sun (Alyssa Wapanatâhk), and Good Eagle (Wren Zhawenim Gotts), but shifting into their home and learning about their struggles is a much-needed addition that breathes life into the new Little House.

With multiple families in completely different circumstances, Little House on the Prairie quickly becomes a more well-rounded drama than it's been in the past. By giving a voice to the Osage in the form of a family who's suffered immense loss, the series is able to bring viewers into a place of empathy as it presents its story, where impossible decisions have to be made as the Ingalls and the Osage community find themselves displaced by a force larger than all of them combined. These stories feel much more layered and nuanced by including the Osage, bringing in various perspectives.

The Osage aren't the only perspectives brought into play on Little House, either. The series incorporates a longer, more complicated story for Dr. George Tann (Jacko Sims), entangling him with a local shop owner, Emily Henderson (Barrett Doss) and giving an even deeper throughline for the town of Independence as a whole. By including different voices, different walks of life, and cultures that aren't typically represented on a show about American pioneers, Little House on the Prairie sets itself apart from other Westerns. Breaking ground with intricate storytelling and an exciting level of representation, the series is redefining the genre.
