HBO's upcoming Harry Potter adaptation may be bringing the wizarding world to life in a whole new way, but there's an aspect to the series that may make its viewers feel ancient. The series, which will adapt J.K. Rowling's record-breaking novels in an entirely different way than the films of the same name, is set to bring the story to life in late 2026. While Rowling's novels took place in the early 1990s, with Harry's first year at Hogwarts starting in 1991, the books themselves began to release later in the decade, with the first coming out in 1997.

As the books spanned over the course of the late 1990s through the late 2000s, the Harry Potter film franchise followed suit. With Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone releasing in 2001, the films ran throughout the decade, ending with the final installment in 2011. This disconnect in time, with the story taking place throughout the '90s and the films running throughout the '00s, didn't make much of a difference on screen, nor was it something that seemed important as the movies continued. Now, however, the timing of Harry's story feels like an important piece of the HBO adaptation's overall puzzle.

While the '90s were the recent past when the Harry Potter books released, and still didn't feel too far off for the films, the newest adaptation releasing in 2026 makes the issue of timing a much trickier one. That means that as of 2026, Harry Potter has officially become a period piece.

Wait, Harry Potter Is A Period Piece Now?!

One of the most unexpected aspects of the new Harry Potter series, or at least one of the most under-considered, is that in the 2020s, the '90s-based story has become a period piece. While "period piece" isn't probably the first, second, or third thing viewers consider when diving into the new adaptation, the fact still stands that Harry Potter takes place in the early '90s, which is now over 30 years ago. The books themselves are set to turn 30 in 2027, and with HBO taking its adaptation seriously, the new show will technically become something entirely different from its predecessors.

While it's likely that the cache of Harry Potter and the wizarding world will take precedence, the differences are likely to be most noticeable in the earlier years of Harry's journey at Hogwarts, which are the furthest in the past. Regardless, the fact that Harry Potter has officially become old enough to be a period piece is spine-tingling, especially to those of us who grew up reading the novels, watching the films, and waiting anxiously for what came next. For some who will be introduced to the world with the new adaptation, the '90s are a historical period rather than a memory that feels all too recent.

Why Harry Potter Couldn't Be Set In The 2020s

Despite the fact that Harry Potter feels like a timeless story, the decision for the HBO adaptation to retain the '90s setting is likely more than a nostalgia play. Harry's story itself may feel like it could've happened at any point in time, including in the present day, but the circumstances surrounding his journey are specific to the time period. The books establish a very specific time period for Harry's arrival at Hogwarts, and that timeline is then adhered to for many of the major details that run throughout each novel. While a timeline shift would've been possible, it doesn't feel entirely necessary to tell the story.

The other issue that comes with shifting Harry Potter into the present timeline is the advent of technology. While the narrative could've chosen to simply bump the years up without factoring present-day technology into the mix, Harry Potter is a story that operates in a hyper-specific nature as it is. Keeping the time period as it appears in the books meant not having to switch up too many unnecessary details, and at the same time, allowing for a more immersive experience for viewers. Whether seeing Harry Potter as a period piece makes you feel old or not, preserving the timeline is what's best for the story.
