In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Invincible season 4, Sandra Oh discusses the possibility of an Omni-Man and Debbie interaction in the future, and given their difficult past, what that could look like and how tough it could be. Check out Oh's comments below:
The focus is and the focus should be on how Debbie would react to this confrontation. And I think dramatically, no matter what, it has to happen. Just dramaturgically, this confrontation does have to happen because Debbie's place as the heartbeat and the humanity of not only herself, but for her children, and also a reminder of humanity, is really important. And this show really confronts a lot of moral questions, not only as existentially for Mark, like who am I? Who am I? Am I my father's son? Am I my own person?
How do I still keep a moral center when there are all these kinds of unconscious or deep forces that are making me do things that I might not want to do? But the pressures of the world and the expectations of the world are pressing me to do that. The confrontation that I think has to happen regarding, I don't want to get into it too much, but it is, what is war? And the effect of destruction, who it destroys, right? Debbie is the voice to say, "You have affected me." Because she's the human. And so I think that we really, really do need to have that voice and need to hear what she has to say.
When Oh says of her central character, "And I think dramatically, no matter what, it has to happen..." it suggests that a real interaction between the two could be coming. Debbie, after all, throughout Invincible seasons 1-3 has endured profound trauma, learning that her husband Omni-Man massacred the Guardians of the Globe, and then subsequently abandoned her and their family.
This takes a significant toll on Debbie. At the end of Invincible season 3, her character grapples with shame, anger, and humiliation, alongside a collapse in her sense of identity. She turns to drinking, becomes increasingly isolated, and while she begins to stabilize, her unresolved relationship with Omni-Man remains, and it's very important to the overall emotional core of the story.
After her separation from Omni-Man, Debbie meets Paul (voiced by Cliff Curtis), who represents a grounded, steady presence. When Oh was asked about Debbie's relationship with Paul, she shared how it could impact a future inevitable confrontation with Omni-Man:
Paul's a good guy. Paul's a good guy. And I think Paul really fulfills a moment of rest, honestly, and grounding for Debbie. But this show is about Invincible and her family in that context. I think what's more important than in her ability to just have her life not be so crazy for a second is dealing with what has happened, is dealing with her relationship with Omni-Man. I mean, if anyone has been in a relationship, which maybe most people have, it's like if you go through a really bad breakup, you can go through as many next relationships as you want, but if you have not dealt with that, that is going to always come up. It's always going to come up. That's the most important thing. And also not only that, it's what's underneath that breakup. I think that's what ultimately the back half of the show has to be about.
When Oh says, "And also not only that, it's what's underneath that breakup. I think that's what ultimately the back half of the show has to be about," it might suggest that not only will she have a resurfacing conversation with Omni-Man, but also it will be a large part of the second half of the season.
Her character Debbie has served as "the heartbeat" of her family's humanity. She is one of the few grounded human lenses in Invincible. And as Invincible season 4 expands its focus on the looming Viltrumite threat, having human moments becomes increasingly important in anchoring the story. This makes Debbie's eventual confrontation with Omni-Man feel not just inevitable, but essential, as it would address a giant, long-building, emotional storyline that also played a large part in Mark's ongoing struggle to define himself against his father's legacy.
