Off Campus isn't calling its timeout on one major couple in season 2.
Off Campus, based on a book series by Elle Kennedy, is currently one of Prime Video's most-watched shows, and it has a 92% Rotten Tomatoes average score among critics and audiences. It's a new romantic drama following the lives of college ice hockey players and their relationships. Each of the five novels that the series is based on is set to follow a specific love story between a player and a fellow student.
In an interview with People, star Mika Abdalla (Allie Hayes) discussed her character's relationship with Stephen Kalyn's character (Dean Di Laurentis) and their possible future. Regarding the next season, Abdalla says, "I think more than anything, it's almost just a way to reset the clock a little bit." Adding, "I think they're flying a little too close to the sun right now."
Both Allie and Dean appear in the TV adaptation earlier than they did in the original novels. In the original book (The Deal), the story focuses on music major Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) and hockey captain Garett Graham (Belmont Cameli). Dean and Allie's relationship didn't get fully explored until the third book (The Score).
Compared to the book series, Hunter Davenport (played by Charlie Evans) arrives earlier. After Dean learns about Davenport's romantic past with Allie and that he will be joining the team, things get more complicated much faster for Dean. This leaves Dean to experience jealousy for possibly one of the first times in his life, and it could suggest a love triangle moving forward.
Regarding this, Abdalla says, "Not only is it really difficult for Dean that he lets his guard down one time and becomes vulnerable and then gets hurt in a way that he's never been hurt before," Adding that the betrayal "makes his guard go up even higher, and he's even more closed off than he was before."
Moving forward, Abdalla reinforced her own character's arc, saying that the "insecurity that [Allie] had in the beginning of season 1 is doubled... Both of these people's fears and insecurities have just been reinforced. And so when we do get to actually explore their relationship, we're starting from an even more damaged, closed-off place... Work needs to be done."
These comments and Davenport's earlier arrival suggest that season 2 could be more focused on the two's relationship than the second book. Instead of Allie and Dean immediately dating in season 2, their story could be evolving from a more damaged, difficult starting point, while John Logan (played by Antonio Cipriano) and Grace Ivers (played by India Fowler) follow the traditional Book 2 (The Mistake) structure.
