The North Road Company, Peter Chernin’s expansive content production shop, has launched a new film label focused on “distinctive filmmaker perspectives with broad audience appeal.”

Called North Road Films, the operation will be led by president Kori Adelson. The producer is already overseeing projects made and co-financed by North Road, including the buzzy upcoming A24 project “Backrooms.” The film is based on a viral conceit about a digital maze that exists outside of reality. 20-year-old Kane Parsons directs Oscar nominees Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film.

North Road Films will operate alongside Chernin Entertainment Film, with a mandate to back both emerging and established directors to produce and finance projects that connect with wide audiences.

“Kori has an incredible eye for talent and stories,” said Scott Manson, CEO of The North Road Company. “We are excited to continue supporting her and the team as they work with top filmmakers to bring cool, commercial films to market.”

In her nine years at Chernin, Adelson has produced films for A24, Netflix and Fox. She served as lead producer on Netflix’s “Fear Street” trilogy –—pioneering a first of its kind back-to-back release strategy — as well as “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” which debuted at No. 1 on Netflix this year. Her credits also include “Spy,” “The Mountain Between Us,” the animated hit “Spies in Disguise” and “Dicks: The Musical” with A24.

“At North Road, we want to work with filmmakers who have singular perspectives and make movies that are original, human, and entertaining — stories that feel specific but resonate with audiences everywhere,” said Adelson.

The executive is currently in post on the upcoming A24 release “Altar,” from writer Will Soodik and directed by Egor Abramenko; and “11817,” written by Matt Robinson and directed by Louis Leterrier. The latter stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. In her new role, she’ll work closely with Apple as part of Chernin’s first-look deal (in concert with VP Caroline Pitofsky and creative executive Grant Donghia).

In January, Mediawan, the leading independent European studio, announced the signing of an agreement to acquire North Road. The combination creates one of the world’s largest independent studios with major creative hubs in the five continents and capabilities spanning all genres and formats. North Road and its labels will serve as Mediawan’s North American hub.
