No Matter What Avengers: Doomsday Does, It Will Never Eclipse My Favorite Moment From Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing for its biggest crossover event since Avengers: Endgame, but the upcoming movie won't be able to surpass one amazing moment from that film. Avengers: Doomsday and its December 18 release date are fast approaching, and Marvel and Disney seem to be pulling out all the stops for it. From Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans returning to the MCU to Fox's X-Men being brought into the cast of Doomsday, this movie is being built up as a massive superhero event.

Marvel and Disney have kept details about Doomsday's plot and the full cast of the film remarkably secretive so far. We still don't know what Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom is planning, whether the Russo brothers will have surprise appearances from other superheroes, or how everything will tie into Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. There are still a lot of unknowns about Doomsday so far, but I know one thing for sure: it won't be able to top Endgame's best moment.

There were a lot of iconic moments in Avengers: Endgame, from the portals scene to Captain America fighting a younger version of himself. The entire film was the culmination of over a decade of cinematic storytelling, and it had plenty of climactic moments to show for it. Doomsday may be able to top some of those moments thanks to its huge cast and unparalleled multiversal story, but it won't be able to top Captain America wielding Mjolnir.

Avengers: Doomsday Will Never Top Captain America Wielding Mjolnir In Endgame

CAPTAIN AMERICA HOLDING MJOLNIR IN AVENGERS ENDGAME

No matter what happens in Avengers: Doomsday, the newer movie won't have a moment better than Captain America fully wielding Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, for the first time in Avengers: Endgame. That's not even an indictment of Doomsday or the current state of the MCU, either, it's a sign of how mind-blowing and awesome Cap wielding Mjolnir really was. It's hard to overstate just how jaw-dropping this scene was.

If you saw Endgame in theaters, you have an idea of how incredible this scene was. People cheered for so long and so loudly that most people probably didn't find out that Thor said "I knew it" until their second or third watch. Even just the shot of Mjolnir slowly levitating off the ground sent my theater into a frenzy that I vividly remember seven years later. It was somehow the most adrenaline-pumping moment in a massive, half-hour climactic fight scene with the fate of the entire MCU on the line.

Cap wielding Mjolnir felt like such a big deal partly because the MCU had done such a meticulous job of setting it up. The Thor movies built up the legend of Mjolnir and the mythos surrounding "worthiness." Avengers: Age of Ultron teased Steve being worthy and forced fans to wait four years for Endgame to make good on it. Even Endgame itself set this moment up as a pivotal point in the battle where Thor was being dominated by Thanos and all hope seemed lost. The only moment that even came close was Tony Stark declaring "I am Iron Man," while wielding all the Infinity stones.

There's a case to be made that Steve finally picking up Mjolnir and tag-team fighting Thanos with Thor is the single best moment in the MCU as a whole. It brought a story arc four years in the making to a satisfying conclusion, it acted as a great turning point in Endgame and the battle, it led into one of the movie's best fights, and more. It felt like a love letter to Marvel fans, and one that won't easily be duplicated or surpassed.

Avengers: Doomsday will definitely have surprises in store for audiences, but I simply can't imagine any of them will be as good as Captain America wielding Mjolnir. Seeing the X-Men interact with the Avengers will be cool, but it won't have nearly as much narrative weight as Endgame. Even if there is a big turning point moment in the fight against Doctor Doom, Doomsday hasn't set up anything at all to the extent Endgame set up Cap wielding Mjolnir.

Avengers: Doomsday Has The Potential For Moments That Are Almost As Good As Endgame's Mjolnir Scene

Cyclops in Avengers Doomsday

It won't be able to top Captain America wielding Mjolnir, but Avengers: Doomsday is still poised to have some truly great moments that can at least compare. As previously mentioned, it should be extremely easy to get some great scenes out of Fox's X-Men actors. James Marsden's Cyclops, for example, was spotted unleashing the full force of his optic blast in a trailer for Doomsday, which could easily be a standout hype moment.

Other parts of Doomsday's story also seem ripe for great scenes. Robert Downey Jr. seems like an inspired choice to play Doctor Doom, and the Russos could easily make him an even better villain than Thanos was. Chris Evans' return to the role of Steve Rogers, as well, could lend itself to some emotionally-charged reunions and great fights. The Russo brothers, as well, likely have an ace up their sleeve that we can't predict that will be the best moment in Doomsday.

While these moments won't be as great as Captain America wielding Mjolnir, they should still be enough to make Doomsday a cinematic event. It's also worth noting that some of the scenes and events of Doomsday could lead to even bigger and better moments in Secret Wars, much the same way Age of Ultron paved the way for Endgame to delight us all. It has a high bar to pass, but Avengers: Doomsday seems poised to at least come close to Endgame.
