Ryan O'Rourke is a Senior News Writer at Collider with a specific interest in all things adult animation, video game adaptations, and the work of Mike Flanagan. He is also an experienced baseball writer with over six years of articles between multiple outlets, most notably FanSided's CubbiesCrib. Whether it's taking in a baseball game, a new season of Futurama or Castlevania: Nocturne, or playing the latest From Software title, he is always finding ways to show his fandom. When it comes to gaming and anything that takes inspiration from it, he is deeply opinionated on what's going on. Outside of entertainment, he's a graduate of Eureka College with a Bachelor's in Communication where he honed his craft as a writer. Between The IV Leader at Illinois Valley Community College and The Pegasus at Eureka, he spent the majority of his college career publishing articles on everything from politics to campus happenings and, of course, entertainment for the student body. Those principles he learned covering the 2020 election, Palestine, and so much more are brought here to Collider, where he has gleefully written on everything from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes to Nathan Lane baby-birding sewer boys.

Every year, in addition to curating event screenings for some of the biggest films, Alamo Drafthouse also makes a point to highlight the great contemporary indie projects through its Drafthouse Recommends series. The program has previously served to celebrate a wide variety of filmmaking that has wowed the Alamo staff, from Oscar-winning gems like Everything Everywhere All At Once to horror favorites like It Follows and foreign language masterpieces like Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden. For its latest entry, the premier dine and drink theater chain has ventured up to The Great White North to give a musical comedy duo their due. Collider can exclusively share a new video featuring Matt Johnson and Jay McCarroll as they accept their entry into Drafthouse Recommends for Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, even if they're not really sure what Drafthouse Recommends is.

The short, hilarious acceptance speech almost immediately goes off the rails from the moment McCarroll plays the friends in. He tries to greet the Alamo Drafthouse staff, but Johnson quickly interjects that he doesn't know if the staff are actually watching along. When McCarroll starts over and tries to say how much it means to have the renowned chain recognize them, Johnson, again, interrupts to correct him. Their hilarious bickering over whether to handle their Drafthouse selection with emotional honesty or the gravitas required of a major award betrays that, in reality, they don't even know what honor they're up for exactly. Yet, Johnson decides to take charge and treat it with the same importance as winning an Oscar, going on about how the duo wondered "daily" if they'd ever get selected for their web series turned mockumentary feature. After learning they didn't even have the name of the honor correct, they manage to salvage the video with a little jingle that shows off McCarroll's musical talents.

Alamo Is Celebrating 'Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie' With Exciting Events

Alamo Drafthouse, especially founder Tim League, is so excited about Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie that, in addition to regular screenings, there will be three special screenings of the film for viewers to take in. The first will include a post-screening Q&A with co-stars and co-writers Johnson and McCarroll, who will answer any burning questions and maybe go on a few hilarious, rambling tangents. This live event will happen exclusively in Los Angeles on February 11, but it will also stream to select locations throughout the country. More theaters, meanwhile, will hold a special one-time feast screening, featuring a four-course meal from Alamo Drafthouse's Executive Chef Brad Sorenson, paying homage to the movie. The menu includes a CN Tower 360 salad, in reference to Matt and Jay's daring staged jump into the Skydome, 2008 Rivoli Ravioli, named for the venue they desperately wish to play at, and the aptly named "The Puff Pastry, The Lemon Curd, The Blackberries, The Dessert." Of course, no Nirvanna the Band meal would be complete without Orbitz, the defunct and surprisingly powerful Canadian citrus soda recreated with made-from-scratch raspberry gel pearls.

Finally, for those who want to look as stylish as Johnson, there's the Fedora Screening. During opening weekend, anyone who comes to see Nirvanna the Band will be treated to a free fedora just like the star's. The hats are only available while supplies last, though, so fans will have to act fast to catch the film in the most appropriate attire possible.

What Is 'Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie' About?
