Nirvana's biggest song of all time is, of course, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" — there is no contesting that. Even though the late frontman, Kurt Cobain, had grown to loathe the song for its eventual mainstream popularity and mainstream exposure, the 1991 grunge anthem has remained not only their biggest, but the entire grunge genre's most celebrated track. It has gotten so big (even becoming Nirvana's signature hit) and is credited with bringing grunge into the mainstream consciousness. It is no secret that the song was intended to be the band's closest thing to a pop song, a fact that Cobain himself had publicly stated. But did you know that the song, considered the band's most successful, is actually a rip-off? Even Cobain himself admitted so.

Cobain wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" himself, but his bandmates — Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic — were also credited with shaping its overall feel. The song is instantly recognizable with its iconic opening guitar riff, complete with the most anthemic chorus in the history of rock. To say it is their magnum opus may be a disrespect to Cobain's name, but it is definitely one of the greatest tracks ever. Although the song came to define the sound of the 1990s, Nirvana also confessed that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a rip-off, inspired by an unexpected fellow alternative rock band: the Pixies.

In a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, Cobain revealed that he was "trying to write the ultimate pop song," saying, "I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it." The Pixies are widely credited with shaping the alternative rock sound, particularly their loud–quiet–loud dynamics — an influence clearly evident in "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Cobain added: "When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band — or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard. ‘Teen Spirit’ was such a clichéd riff. It was so close to a Boston riff or ‘Louie, Louie.’ When I came up with the guitar part, Krist looked at me and said, “That is so ridiculous.” I made the band play it for an hour and a half."

While Pixies tracks like “Where Is My Mind?” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven” clearly influenced the sound of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the Nirvana song still became the most popular, best known for introducing the grunge genre into the mainstream. That’s not to say the Pixies were any less impactful. They were, after all, used as an inspiration to create what would become the biggest grunge song in existence — and subsequently the reason why Cobain grew to dislike the song over time.

Kurt Cobain’s Complicated Relationship With "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

It is safe to say Cobain had grown to be the biggest "Smells Like Teen Spirit" detractor. The lead single from Nevermind became Nirvana’s biggest hit, topping charts around the world in 1991 and 1992. Ironically, the song that made the band famous was also the one Cobain later grew tired of, as he felt it overshadowed their other music and created expectations he never intended to fulfill. Despite its lasting popularity, it was not especially meaningful to him. In fact, Cobain did not even perform “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at what would be his final public appearance before his death on April 5, 1994. He once said in an interview:

“Once it got into the mainstream, it was over. I’m just tired of being embarrassed by it. I’m beyond that… The reason it gets a big reaction is people have seen it on MTV a million times. It’s been pounded into their brains. But I think there are so many other songs that I’ve written that are as good, if not better than that song, like ‘Drain You’. That’s definitely as good as ‘Teen Spirit.’ I love the lyrics, and I never get tired of playing it. Maybe if it was as big as ‘Teen Spirit,’ I wouldn’t like it as much.”
