As Nicolas Cage enters the latest of his many comebacks — the actor is set to star in Prime Video's upcoming Spider-Noir series — one of his greatest movies is seeing a viewership spike on streaming. This was the movie that truly began Cage's renaissance some years ago, which he has followed through on in stops and starts. The actor was viewed as an Oscar contender that year, but he was ultimately snubbed. He has since said that he delivered his favorite performance in the independent film, which served as the directorial debut of Michael Sarnoski. The filmmaker has gone on to work in franchise cinema and is now gearing up for the release of a bold new original movie this summer. The movie in question was among the most-watched titles on the global Paramount+ charts this week, according to FlixPatrol.
It trailed three major IP-driven films — Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, The Naked Gun, and World War Z. These three films have grossed a combined total of more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but Cage's movie grossed less than $5 million in its theatrical run. It was produced on a tiny reported budget of $2 million, and featured only one other character of significance. Five years after its release, the movie holds a "Certified Fresh" 97% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
Nicolas Cage's Masterpiece Is Surging on Streaming
The movie in question is Pig, a drama in which Cage plays a grieving former chef who goes on a vengeful quest when his beloved truffle-hunting pig is stolen. The film has only grown in stature in the years since its release, and is often counted among the greatest cult classics of the decade. Collider named it one of the best drama films of the 2020s so far, and Rotten Tomatoes' consensus for the movie reads, "Like the animal itself, Pig defies the hogwash of expectations with a beautiful odyssey of loss and love anchored by Nicolas Cage's affectingly raw performance." Cage will now star as John Madden in a biopic directed by the controversial David O. Russell, while Sarnoski is set to release his dark thriller film The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman, in June. Sarnoski has also been announced as the director of a Death Stranding adaptation.
You can watch Pig at home. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
