The only detail in the initial report was that the game would apparently be helmed by Josh Sawyer, the director of New Vegas and the fantastic medieval RPG Pentiment. Now, we have a rough assessment of what to expect from the general nature of the next entry in the Fallout series.
In a new episode of the Xbox Two podcast on YouTube, Xbox reporter Jez Corden laid out a basic picture of the new Fallout game. While Obsidian Entertainment was founded by isometric Fallout developers and continued that proficiency with the isometric Pillars of Eternity games, Corden has heard that the new entry will be in the style of the modern, fully 3D Fallout games.
That may not be surprising — Obsidian's New Vegas already followed Fallout 3's example — but Corden's other intel will likely be what fans want to hear. Corden has also "heard this is a true, core Fallout game" rather than any kind of spin-off. Whether that means it's Fallout 5, New Vegas 2, or something else entirely remains to be seen, but it won't be anything as ancillary as Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.
More speculatively, Corden doesn't particularly expect it to be called Fallout 5, but he wouldn't be surprised by a name like Fallout: Chicago (this isn't based on any confirmation of location, to be clear). If Obsidian doesn't end up making New Vegas 2, it would certainly make sense for them to explore a fresh corner of the Fallout universe, as Bethesda probably isn't looking to outsource direct follow-ups to Fallout 3 or 4.
It'll likely be a while before we get a fuller picture of what to expect from the next Fallout, but the confirmation that this will be a "true, core" installment in the series should hopefully keep fans happy for a while (and distract from some of the bitter aftertaste of lay-offs at Xbox studios). After years of having no upcoming Fallout game anywhere on the horizon, now is not the time to start looking Obsidian's gift horse in the month.
