Netflix's upcoming TV show, The WONDERfools, will be a superhero series that falls somewhere in the realm of The Incredibles and The Boys. Of course, movies and TV shows that revolve around people with superpowers are a dime a dozen, especially in this day and age. The MCU and DC Universe make it hard to find anything fresh in that arena. This leaves only one option—load a story up with superhero tropes, layer it with comedy, and add a nostalgic flair.
Though Pixar's The Incredibles and Prime Video's The Boys couldn't be more different, both shows capture the above elements in one way or another. The Incredibles revolves around a dysfunctional super-powered family as they struggle with normalcy and identity. The Boys follows a vigilante team that stands against dangerous and corrupt superheroes. Both emphasize an idealized "golden age" of heroics through well-loved superhero tropes, all while poking fun at the genre.
Now, another superhero TV show is on the way to check all the same boxes. Netflix's The WONDERfools is a Korean series directed by Extraordinary Attorney Woo's Yoo In-sik, who is rejoined by star Park Eun-bin. This time, Park plays Eun Chae-ni, a Y2K underdog who suddenly discovers that she has acquired superpowers.
Netflix's The WONDERfools Follows An "Ordinary" Found-Family As They Discover Their Superpowers
Set in 1999 when Y2K hysteria was at its highest, The WONDERfools follows Park's Chae-ni and her motley crew of friends, all of whom discover that they have powers after getting caught up in an unexpected accident. The idea here is that they are painfully unqualified. They are completely ordinary in every way, and only clumsily accept and use their powers. The characters of The WONDERfools are lovably flawed trainwrecks who must grapple with their identities and worth as "heroes."
It's a similar, more adult approach to Pixar's The Incredibles. Though the characters in this film franchise are born with their powers, the overarching themes center on their struggles with identity, normalcy, worth, and familial connection. The Incredibles is also set in an alternate version of the 1960s, nostalgically evoking a "golden era" of superhero fiction while adding modern flair. The WONDERfools will achieve something similar with its 1999 setting, as it outlines a Y2K reality different from the one that actually played out at the turn of the century.
The WONDERfools Is Another Satirical Superhero TV Show To Rival The Boys
The WONDERfools will, of course, do more than adopt the nostalgic and heartwarming elements of The Incredibles. This Netflix comedy series will be another superhero satire like The Boys, which aims to turn traditional tropes on their heads. In the Prime Video series, the traditional superhero narrative is flipped. The super-powered individuals are the corrupt villains, while ordinary humans stand as their opposing vigilantes. This twisted concept is layered with dark comedy and intense violence in The Boys, making it laughably ridiculous but shockingly entertaining.
While the heroes of The WONDERfools at least have superpowers, the fact that they are "awkward townies" and "trainwrecks" makes them entirely different from the typical with-great-power-comes-great-responsibility types. They are downright silly, but, just as in The Boys, their uniqueness is used to challenge the traditional hero narrative.
This is plenty of fun, but The WONDERfools can't survive on outrageous comedy and satire alone. The Boys is marked by its high intensity and epic action sequences, and Netflix's upcoming series promises to deliver in this regard as well. These characters may have no idea how to use their powers, and they might not be the most graceful, but their time as heroes will be powerfully explosive, nonetheless. Suffice it to say that if these are your kind of superhero stories, The WONDERfools must be your next Netflix binge after it premieres on May 15, 2026.
