Collier Jennings is an entertainment journalist with a substantial amount of experience under his belt. Collier, or "CJ" to his friends and family, is a dedicated fan of genre films - particularly science fiction, fantasy and comic book adaptations, not to mention all forms of animation animation. This stems from a close bond with his father, who introduced him to these genres via copies of X-Men comics and reruns of the original Ultraman series. Using his near-encyclopedic knowledge and bottomless love of genre, he's been able to tackle a wide variety of articles.

The end of the world apparently makes for great television, as most shows that dominate pop culture conversation often tackle dystopia. Think of The Walking Dead, which spawned a universe of spinoffs that continues to this day, or The Last of Us, which adapts the popular video games to devastating effect. Most people would probably point to Silo or Fallout as the pre-dominant post-apocalypse show; the former is a stunning acting showcase for Rebecca Ferguson, while the latter proves video game adaptations can work in the right hands. Netflix is about to give both shows a run for their money with its upcoming series, The Future Is Ours.

Based on the novel The World Jones Made by Philip K. Dick, The Future Is Ours takes place in the year 2047. Following total ecological collapse, a collection of South American countries has formed a borderline authoritarian movement called FedSur to police what's left of humanity. Enter Jonás Flores, a priest with the ability to see into the future. Jonás predicts that climate change will be reversed...after FedSur falls, sparking a revolution across South America. If that wasn't enough of a hook, Netflix is taking an approach to The Future Is Ours that makes it unlike any current post-apocalyptic series on the market.

When The Future Is Ours was announced last year, it was with an entirely Latin American cast and crew, making this the first Philip K. Dick work adapted in Spanish. That includes writers and directors from other Spanish-language Netflix shows such as One Hundred Years of Solitude, meaning that The Future Is Ours will carry a unique cultural aspect to it. We've seen how the end of the world will affect America, but what does it mean for other nations and countries? What does the future look like for a priest in Latin America? Netflix's Vice President of Content for Latin America, Francisco Ramos, hinted that The Future Is Ours will tackle those questions and more when the series was first announced.

The Future Is Ours also continues a trend of Netflix leaning into more foreign language productions, as this approach yielded some of the streamer's greatest hits, including Squid Game and Lupin. The Future Is Ours has the potential to follow in their footsteps, showcasing that the genres people love can take on new meaning in a different cultural concept. It'll also continue to cement Philip K. Dick as arguably the most influential sci-fi author of his time, since his work constantly inspires different films and television shows.

Philip K. Dick's Work Has Influenced Countless Films & TV Shows

The Future Is Ours isn't the only Philip K. Dick adaptation to hit screens. Dick's work has been adapted into critically acclaimed films, including Minority Report, The Adjustment Bureau, and most importantly, Blade Runner. It's even been adapted into an anthology series titled Electric Dreams, which features an all-star cast taking on adaptions of some of his short stories. While most of these adaptations take liberties with the stories they're based on, they still keep the spirit of Dick's stories intact. The Future Is Ours is slated to follow in those footsteps, as Dick's daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, is serving as a producer under her Electric Sheperd Productions Banner. Hackett talked about her involvement with the series when it was first announced, saying she worked closely with showrunner Mateo Gil.

"It's an honor and a privilege to collaborate with Netflix, Francisco Ramos, and this stellar creative team on the first Spanish-language adaptation of my father's work for the screen. Mateo's adaptation of the novel is inventive and bold while retaining the essence of the original. I have long believed that the rich culture and incredible talent in Latin America provide an extraordinary setting for this sort of ambitious project, and the passion expressed by the entire team is truly inspiring."

In taking a wholly unique approach to the post-apocalyptic story and Philip K. Dick's work, The Future Is Ours has all the ingredients to be a smash sci-fi hit. Time will tell if it succeeds.
