The historical fiction novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was written by Taylor Jenkins Reid and published in 2017. Reid based the book's main character on Old Hollywood icons, as the story follows a reclusive, aging 79-year-old movie icon, Evelyn Hugo, who selects an unknown magazine writer, Monique Grant, to write her tell-all biography. Since its release, the novel has become a worldwide success, including on BookTok, and it landed on bestseller lists for many weeks.
In an interview with E! News, Anna Kendrick spoke about the upcoming adaptation of the beloved Reid novel and gave a big update on the progress of the movie. Netflix will be adapting the movie, with Kendrick in the director's chair, as she promises that she's "thinking about the fans all the time." When discussing the progress of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie, Kendrick stated:
"We're still in the script phase. So I cannot accidentally say something that will get me in so much trouble. I'm thinking about the fans all the time. Whenever somebody comes up to me and is like, ‘Oh, my best friend or my agent or my so-and-so is like, you don't understand. They're obsessed with that book.’ I'm like, 'Give me their number.'
I want to talk to them because I want to know exactly what gets at the heart of it for people, because this book is so moving, and I, of course, have a big task ahead of me, and I am desperate to get it right."
The cast has yet to be revealed, with fans casting their desired actors and actresses into the roles in the novel. 3 Body Problem star Eiza González has been a name suggested by many, and recently spoke to E! News about her close personal relationship with the novel's author. González stated, "I genuinely read that book and I became a fan. I read Daisy [Jones & The Six], and I read Malibu [Rising], I read all her books. She used to send me the books ahead of time, so I read them and give her my opinion, and I love her. I think she's really talented."
