Netflix's record-breaking shark horror movie has received a massive sequel update.

There has been a major update in the development of Under Paris 2, with the sequel finally reaching an important milestone. The upcoming film is a direct follow-up to 2024's Under Paris, a French action-horror movie about a giant shark appearing in the Seine of Paris, France. The shark movie became a major hit for the streaming platform, becoming the most-watched French movie of all time and second most-watched non-English language film of all time on Netflix. A sequel began development in late 2024.

Now, Variety confirms that Under Paris 2 has begun filming in the south of France, the shark sequel film finally entering production. The movie will see Bérénice Bejo return as marine researcher Sophia, alongside Nassim Lyes as police diver Adil. Anne Marivin will return as the Mayor of Paris, while Guillaume Gouix, Phillippe Bas, and Manon Bresch join the cast as newcomers. In addition, a logline reveals the sequel will be set three years after the events of the first, with Sophia and Adil teaming up to find the shark Lilith after she began reproducing in the flooded city.

Read the full logline below:

Three years after the Paris triathlon disaster, the center of the Capital is submerged. Sophia (Bejo) and Adil (Lyes) reunite for a high-risk mission: to track Lilith, the original predator, in the shark-infested Seine. There, they will discover that the deadly wildlife hides a much more surprising reality…

Xavier Gens, who directed and co-wrote the original movie, returns to write with Gregory Levasseur, Frédéric Garcia, William Laboury, Fanny Talmone, and new director Alexandre Aja. Aja is best known for the 2019 alligator horror movie Crawl and, most recently, the 2024 survival horror movie Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry. Gen and Aja also serve as associate producers, while Vincent Roget produces. In addition, Aja released a statement about his involvement as both director and writer for the shark sequel film:

I love Paris, and I always wanted to make a shark movie, so it was an obvious yes when the opportunity came to take the story even deeper.

A Shark with a Triathlon Swimmer in Its Mouth in Under Paris

Under Paris has been favorably compared to the likes of Jaws for the approach to its story, which involves a group of scientists trying to catch and contain a mutant shark swimming around the Seine. However, where the films differ is the approach the French shark movie has to its subject, which involves a wide array of horrors that impact not just Paris, but the world. Under Paris' brutal kills make it a memorable shark movie, with an engaging, high-octane disaster approach that continues to grow even bleaker as the film continues.

By the end of Under Paris, not only is Lilith still free, but the city becomes flooded as her progeny continue to spread throughout Paris. An end-credits scene also revealed the mutant sharks have spread to bodies of water all around the world, making it almost apocalyptic in scope. With a three-year time jump and a focus on the original main characters of Under Paris, though, the sequel seems like it's going to broaden the scope while also showcasing a very specific mission for the core duo as they try to right a now-devastated world.

With Under Paris 2 only just beginning production, it'll be quite some time before more information about the movie gets revealed. Luckily, the logline is enough to know the story will be a worthy follow-up to the original that can use the developments in Paris and around the world as the core driving force behind whatever comes next.
