2018’s The Haunting of Hill House was a game changer for Netflix, Mike Flanagan, and for genre storytelling. Flanagan already had success in the feature film realm with Oculus, Hush, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, just to name a few, but Hill House was the type of hit that sent his career soaring, and paved the way to four more series with Netflix. Every single one of those shows was a feat in genre storytelling. They made Netflix a go-to destination for high-quality horror, and also amplified the fact that horror is a genre with range and significant substance. Yes, there are jump scares, blood and gore, but you can also tell a deeply human horror story that can be both bone chilling and soulful.
After 2023’s The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan’s run with Netflix came to an end and off he went to Amazon MGM Studios where he signed an exclusive multi-year TV pact. Three years later, Netflix found a creator capable of filling the Flanagan void. It’s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’s Haley Z. Boston. And the success of her eight-episode limited series isn’t only sending her star soaring. It also confirms that star Camila Morrone is and should continue to be a genre star.
If she’s interested in making more genre series at Netflix, I certainly hope the streamer gives her that chance.
Image via NetflixI first took note of Boston in 2021 when Netflix released Brand New Cherry Flavor, a wonderfully bonkers horror miniseries from Nick Antosca (Channel Zero) and Lenore Zion, based on the novel by Todd Grimson. Rosa Salazar lights up the screen, as she always does, playing Lisa Nova, an aspiring filmmaker who turns to the supernatural to get revenge. The show’s singular vibe and hypnotic quality left me eager to see what the writers went on to do next and, for Boston, that meant working with a favorite filmmaker. She wrote an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
When news broke she’d be at the helm of her very own Netflix series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen became a must-track project, and now that the show is out, it’s further cemented Boston as must-track talent.

With Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen currently enjoying a position in Netflix’s Top 10 TV Shows in the US, Morrone sat down for a Collider Ladies Night interview to discuss her collaboration with Boston, and also to talk about her first go-around in the horror genre. The moment Morrone heard who was involved in the miniseries, she knew she found the right project to make that leap with.
“This was [Haley’s] first time on set. This 27-year-old girl got a show at Netflix. That's kind of when the pitch came to me. They were like, ‘It's the Duffer Brothers, it's Weronika [Tofilska],’ who I was such a fan of [from] Baby Reindeer, and then they were like, ‘And this new writer coming onto the scene, Haley Z. Boston.’ And I was like, ‘Oh,’ and I read the pilot and I was like, ‘She's really cool.’”
Morrone’s initial impression proved to be spot on. Not only did Boston have a clear vision for Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, but she also had the perfect lesson plan to ensure Morrone would be able to excel while playing in the genre for the very first time.
“Every question I had for her, she had an answer for, and it was not something she had to think about, and so that just showed me that she really knew this story inherently and had a point of view. I actually gained a lot of respect for her when she built me the Letterboxd films to watch in reference for the [show]. So much of the work that I do is before I get to set, so the months before, the first thing I do is like, ‘Tell me any character performance you want me to watch, anything tonally, anything for comedy, anything for atmospheric horror, anything for tone and tempo. What should I be listening to?’ So Haley built me a really beautiful Letterboxd list, and it was a mix of a lot of films that I hadn't seen because I didn't really know much about the horror genre. So it was Carrie and Rosemary's Baby and Birth. We were talking about The Vanishing, which I loved, and Funny Games and Wicker Man. I had seen Hereditary and Midsommar, and I loved Ari [Aster]’s films. And then there was The Celebration, which was a family drama, and there was a film called All My Friends Hate Me that I loved so much.”
‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’ Is About a Curse and So Much More
“The curse was complicated.”
Morrone stars in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen as Rachel, Nicky’s (Adam DiMarco) bride-to-be. They’re off to his family's secluded and stunning vacation home for the nuptials and are hoping for a lovely ceremony surrounded by his relatives, but Rachel just can’t shake the feeling that something very bad is going to happen. Sure enough, she soon comes to realize her bloodline is cursed, and that curse specifically targets those preparing to marry. Marry your true soulmate? You’re in the clear. Marry the wrong person? Death, known on set as “the very bad POV,” will come for you.
Morrone began, “The curse was complicated.” She continued:
“I think we're all still a little bit like, ‘What are the rules of the curse?’ Setting that up at Netflix, we had to really clarify because I think there was a lot of confusion about, like, ‘Well, what happens if you don't get married? How does it spread to his bloodline?’ Funny enough, I only got the pilot when I signed on, and then maybe I got two and three, but I did not read past three until we were about to film four. So, I did not know that this show was about a curse or going into a curse until I was already filming.”
The curse is brilliant. Not only is it a thrill to try to put the pieces together and anticipate Rachel’s options and ultimate outcome, but it also serves as a way to examine the concepts of marriage and soulmates on screen like never before. Flanagan had a habit of doing just that in his shows, too. Midnight Mass took a supernatural scenario and used it to address alcoholism. The Haunting of Bly Manor is a gothic ghost story that digs into memory and grief. He shines new light on very real and deeply challenging truths through creative horror storytelling, and now Boston is doing just that, too.
This Is Only the Beginning for the ‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’ Ensemble
Image via NetflixAll of Flanagan’s shows are ensemble pieces, and every single time, without fail, he assembles a group of highly skilled actors who breathe a unique sense of life into their characters, turning them into people you can’t take your eyes off of. Boston does just that in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
The core concept of the show is that curse, but again, it’s a curse that impacts a family, so if all the family members don’t make a big impression, the ending simply won’t work. But, just like Flanagan, Boston made her show with a top-tier ensemble.
In addition to Morrone, the series features DiMarco, Gus Birney, Karla Crome, Sawyer Fraser, Jeff Wilbusch, Ted Levine, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the Cunningham family. Everyone gets scene-stealing moments and everyone serves the overall storyline precisely how they need, but I suspect Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen could put Birney on the map like never before.
Her role as Nicky’s sister Portia seems incredibly hard to calibrate. She spends nearly the entire series putting herself first, bossing Rachel around, and making ridiculous demands. She’s a frustrating character to watch, but in Birney’s hands, she also becomes impossibly magnetizing.
While discussing her co-stars, Morrone agreed that Birney, in particular, is doing something fantastically singular.
“Gus, she’s like monster sister-in-law. She's so funny. Her comedic timing is incredible. I really do think that everybody came and brought 10-out-of-10 work, and worked on their character so individually that they brought it so fleshed out and fully imagined. Then the combination of this ensemble of just, like, Jeff is so different, then Gus is so different from Karla and Jennifer. It's just all these very unique characters in this family blended together, and I just think it worked. And they didn't work with each other much before. There wasn't much rehearsal, so everyone just brought their character and they're like, ‘You're a family,’ and I think that that actually worked really well.”
Cast Camila Morrone in More Horror Movies & Shows, Please
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen marks her first horror project, and hopes are high there will be many more to come.
Image via NetflixYet another essential aspect of this production is finding the right lead, and Boston got a stellar anchor in Morrone as Rachel. Morrone’s already accomplished quite a bit in her career, like earning an Emmy nomination for Daisy Jones & The Six, but Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen marks a major first for her. It’s her first foray into the horror genre, and given the emotional intensity of this piece and the fact that almost all of this story is told from her character’s perspective, it was bound to be a massive challenge.
“It was a really hard shoot for me. It was a really hard shoot physically to be out in the cold for that many months in the Canadian winter. It was really, really hard, and there were so many moments where I was in tears, just feeling like, ‘How am I on day seven and how am I going to get to day 80 of this really heavy character?’ And you do it, and then you look back and you're so proud of what you've done. I would do it all over again tomorrow. I felt like it was the biggest mountain I've ever climbed, and then when I got to the top, I was like, ‘I miss it already.’ I'm really grateful. I didn't think I'd get through the shoot, and we did. We now have this memory of this time in our life, and I'm so proud of it.”
Morrone went on to call Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen “my intro to horror,” and tease, “maybe there's more.”
