Netflix and the Russo Brothers have made several attempts at launching franchises over the years, but the one property that the blockbuster filmmakers didn't direct themselves turned out to be the most successful. The ones they actually directed — The Gray Man and The Electric State — were widely criticized as being creatively uninspired and a waste of money. The Gray Man cost more than $200 million to produce and was supposed to start a shared universe; The Electric State was designed as a franchise-starter as well, and assigned a reported budget of $320 million. However, the one Russo Brothers property that clearly stood out was the 2020 film Extraction, headlined by Thor star Chris Hemsworth. The franchise continued with a second film in 2023, and is expected to return with a third installment that recently received an exciting update.
According to What's On Netflix, Extraction 3 is set to enter production very soon in Hemsworth's backyard. It will also involve a key department head who worked on Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Like the first and second films, Extraction 3 will also be directed by the franchise's creative architect, Sam Hargrave. He worked as a stunt performer and stunt coordinator on several Marvel movies, and has had a Chad Stahelski-esque career pivot to direction. Before beginning work on Extraction 3, Hargrave will deliver Apple TV's Matchbox: The Movie, starring John Cena and Jessica Biel. Hargrave has made a name for himself for constructing elaborate action sequences that appear to unfold in a single, unbroken take. Both Extraction and Extraction 2 received praise for these centerpiece sequences.

Original vs. Remake of 3:10 to Yuma — The Collider Movie Quiz!
Today's date is 3/10, so it's a perfect time to compare the two versions of 3:10 to Yuma. Besides 50 years, what else separates these two films?
The first Extraction film, which introduced Hemsworth's hulking character Tyler Rake, holds a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Released in 2023, Extraction 2 holds an 80% score on the aggregator website. The sequel ends with the introduction of a new character, played by Idris Elba, who will perhaps make an appearance in the third film as well. According to What's On Netflix, Extraction 3 is set to enter production in June; it will be filmed in Hemsworth's home country of Australia, as well as several locations in Europe. The movie will reportedly be shot by Fraser Taggart, who worked on the last two Mission: Impossible films with director Christopher McQuarrie. Taggart replaces Extraction's Newton Thomas Sigel, who is busy with Avengers: Doomsday, and the second film's Greg Baldi. The franchise is set to expand with two spin-offs — an eight-episode series titled The Mercenary, starring Omar Sy and created by Glen Mazzara, and Tygo, a movie set in South Korea and starring Don Lee.
