The best anime on Netflix is both an easily bingeable streaming gem and a masterful adaptation. As audiences have become more receptive to cross-media franchises, studios have learned that faithful adaptation is the key to success. When handled with care, video game-based anime can deepen world-building as much as the interactive installments themselves.
Debuting in 1986, Castlevania quickly became one of Konami’s flagship properties due to its unique blend of gothic horror aesthetics with punishing gameplay. Throughout the years, Castlevania evolved from linear action platformers into its own genre. Its recurring Belmont clan and its reinterpretation of Dracula have also played a key role in the franchise’s longevity, especially because they transcend the medium.
Netflix's Castlevania Is A Streaming Must-Watch
The 2017 Castlevania Show Is An Essential Part Of Its Franchise
The 2017 Castlevania series penned by comic book writer Warren Ellis reimagines Konami’s gothic action games as a grim fantasy epic. Loosely adapting Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the animated show follows Trevor Belmont, the last disgraced member of a legendary monster-hunting clan, as he joins forces with the sorceress Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s dhampir son, Alucard, to stop Vlad Dracula Tepes’ war against humanity. Produced by Powerhouse Animation, Netflix's Castlevania uses heavy shadows and painterly gothic backdrops to capture the spirit of the games accurately.
Castlevania is widely praised for elevating the standard of video game adaptations and Western-produced anime-inspired TV animation. The 2017 show preserves the games' iconography, music cues, and mythological elements, but its mature writing, and Shakespearean dialogue help it stand out. While there are certainly some departures from the source material, Netflix's Castlevania is often regarded as one of the most successful game-to-screen adaptations ever produced.
Castlevania: Nocturne Is Just As Good As Its Predecessor
Netflix's Castlevania Maintains Its Quality Throughout Several Seasons
Netflix’s Castlevania maintained an unusually consistent level of writing and animation quality across no less than four seasons. It’s even more impressive that this standard carried over into an entirely new era with a different protagonist. Castlevania: Nocturne shifts the focus to Richter Belmont, descendant of Trevor and Sypha, during the French Revolution. Despite the change in cast and context, Nocturne retains the franchise’s dark tone and meticulous animation across two seasons.
It's pretty common for animated series to suffer quality drops halfway between seasons or even halfway through a season. Even acclaimed animated properties as big as Dragon Ball and One Piece often experience wonky animation and uneven writing over time. That Castlevania not only sustained its quality through four seasons but successfully extended that standard into Nocturne shows how strong creative oversight and clear plans for the near future almost guarantee sustained success. Hence, it's only a matter of time until Castlevania: Nocturne season 3 is announced.
