Netflix's Lupin is one of the platform's best mystery thrillers, and its current three seasons are even better on a rewatch. The French series stars Omar Sy (Jurassic World) in one of his most exciting roles yet, and the story is set to continue. Netflix often cancels shows too soon despite their potential, so the fact that Lupin will return is an extremely positive sign.
Lupin is one of the best crime shows on Netflix, as it stands out from other thrillers for its unusual plot and interesting main character. While there are some fantastic shows about antiheroes, the best TV antiheroes are almost always villains. However, Lupin's central character, Assane Diop, takes a common trope and improves it, giving viewers an antihero to root for.
What Is Lupin About?
Lupin is based on the classic literary character, Arsène Lupin, whose exploits inspire the burglar Assane Diop, who enjoyed the stories as a child. Diop is a modernized version of the gentleman thief archetype, and he uses his charm and wit to outsmart other characters. Lupin has several likable characters, but Diop steals every scene he is in.
Rather than greed, Assane Diop is motivated by the desire to avenge his father's death, and the show expertly tackles subjects like racial injustice as Diop uses the upper-class prejudice against him to his own advantage. Lupin is both polished and cinematic, but the series has an emotional depth that many others lack, making it a masterpiece that deserves its 98% positive Rotten Tomatoes score.
How Lupin Has Maintained Its Quality
Many crime shows have declined or lost momentum over time. However, Lupin has steadily maintained its quality. Part of this may be because the show has relatively short seasons, which means there are no filler episodes. Lupin's first season was split into two parts with five episodes each, and the second contained just seven episodes, which were all equally compelling.
Another significant reason for the show's success is Omar Sy's excellent performance as the charismatic Assane Diop, for which he won a Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Even as Lupin introduced twists, Sy's presence kept the show grounded. After Lupin season 3's shocking ending, viewers will be relieved that he is returning to continue the story.
Lupin Season 4 Is Confirmed
After season 3 introduced a surprise cliffhanger following Diop's last planned heist, Lupin season 4 has some burning questions to answer. While filming for the series officially wrapped in 2025, promotional material has not yet shed much light on the central story, which is currently a mystery. That said, promotional material shows Diop in France, so the show's location is likely to remain the same.
Lupin season 4 is expected to continue Diop's mission against powerful institutions, and the series is likely to raise the stakes, with new challenges for the character. To keep the next series consistent, the show must continue to highlight social justice, giving Diop the moral high ground. Netflix has confirmed that the next installment of the Lupin story will air in the fall of 2026.
