A Netflix action thriller recently returned with a second season and rose in the ranks to become one of its top trending shows. While the series' slam-bang action sequences alone are enough to keep you hooked throughout its runtime, what makes its season 2 even more fascinating is that it features an iconic K-pop as its main villain.
Bloodhounds season 2, which has been ranking among Netflix's top non-English shows for the last four weeks, marks the return of the dynamic duo, Woo Do-hwan's Kim Gun-woo and Lee Sang-yi's Hong Woo-jin. Since the two leads managed to overcome the overarching threat in season 1, the Netflix K-drama's season 2 introduces a whole new villain, Im Baek-jeong.
Im Baek-jeong is played by K-pop icon, Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) who has earned numerous accolades throughout his musical career. In Bloodhounds season 2, though, Rain almost seems unrecognizable as the villain. He perfectly captures his character's ruthlessness in the show's brutal action scenes and also delivers each dialogue with such intensity that he almost disappears in the role.
Rain's Terrifying Portrayal Of Bloodhounds Season 2's Villain Is A Reminder Of His Forgotten Hollywood Role
Rain looks absolutely terrifying every time he shows up on the screen as Bloodhounds season 2's villain, Baek-jeong. He not only nails his complete lack of empathy towards others but also perfectly captures how overpowered he is during action scenes. After seeing Rain in Bloodhounds, it is hard not to recall his role in the Hollywood action movie, Ninja Assassin.
While the movie struggled to leave its mark among critics, it proved to be moderately successful from a commercial standpoint. In the film, Rain portrays a reformed ninja who turns his back on the same orphanage that raised him. Rain's character, Raizo, in Ninja Assassin, is portrayed more as an anti-hero, but his quiet intensity in the film is similar to his portrayal of Baek-jeong in Bloodhounds.
Both characters are revealed to be extremely overpowered, but Bark-jeong is made to look far more intimidating. Even his fighting style is more aggressive, and he shows absolutely no mercy towards his enemies.
Bloodhounds season 2's success on Netflix can be attributed to many factors, including its brilliantly choreographed action sequences and perfectly escalating stakes. Even the returning leads, Woo Do-hwan's Kim Gun-woo and Lee Sang-yi's Hong Woo-jin, do a great job of carrying the series and masterfully executing each action sequence.
However, along with everything, Rain, too, deserves immense credit for the show's success. He ensures that his grim portrayal of the main villain never veers into caricature and maintains a disturbing realism that makes him genuinely terrifying. His performance in season 2 ensures that the show's new installment feels a lot more intense and consequential than the opening season.
Rain Must Return In Bloodhounds Season 3
Soyun Jeon, Seowoo Jung / NetflixBloodhounds season 2's ending initially suggests that Baek-jeong is dead. However, a post-credits twist confirms that his death was faked by even bigger antagonists at play, who expect him to work for them. With this twist, Bloodhounds season 2 confirms that if season 3 sees the light of day, Rain's character will potentially return.
Since Rain's character is the leading antagonist in Bloodhounds season 2, it would be interesting to see the hinted change in his power scale in the next installment of the series. Bloodhounds season 3 could also feature a rematch between Baek-jeong and Geon-woo. Both characters have beaten each other once in a one-on-one fist fight. A third fight could perfectly determine who among them is better.
Considering how Netflix has not made any official announcements surrounding Bloodhounds season 3 yet, it is hard to be certain about the show's future. However, the show's wide positive reception and commercial success will likely pave the way for its return. Bloodhounds season 2's ending story setup also confirms that the Netflix K-drama's creators wish to continue its story with another installment.
Hopefully, Bloodhounds season 3 will happen soon on Netflix and mark Rain's return as Baek-jeong.
