Netflix Is Removing Taylor Sheridan’s Oscar-Nominated Neo-Western This Summer

Before he became the streaming maven he is today, Taylor Sheridan was a struggling actor-turned-writer. He first tried to break in with a horror film, but soon pivoted to his true passion. In the 2010s, Sheridan wrote a spiritually connected trilogy of neo-Western movies, the last of which he also directed. All three movies received exceptional reviews and did well at the box office, with the second film earning him a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the Oscars. The movie remains the top-rated project — across films and shows — that Sheridan has ever been a part of. It's currently streaming on Netflix, but is scheduled to be removed from the streamer soon.

This year, the film in question is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It starred Chris Pine and Ben Foster as a couple of bank robbers who are tailed by law enforcement officers played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham. The movie initially seemed like something in the vein of the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men, but, in hindsight, is a near-ideal example of the template that Sheridan is now known for. Directed by David Mackenzie, the movie holds a "Certified Fresh" 97% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. This is higher than the 91% that the spiritually connected trilogy's first installment, Sicario, currently holds. It's also higher than the 87% that Wind River, which was also directed by Sheridan, is now sitting at.

The movie we're talking about, of course, is Hell or High Water. The movie grossed around $37 million worldwide against a reported budget of $12 million after premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. It was nominated in four categories at the Oscars: Besides Sheridan's Best Original Screenplay nod, it was recognized in the Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor (Bridges), and the prestigious Best Picture categories. Sheridan's subsequent work in film hasn't been quite as well received as the trilogy — he went on to write Prime Video's Without Remorse and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and will make a comeback next year with the action film F.A.S.T.
