The end of an era for streaming has come to pass.
Netflix will be ending services on a major video game system next month, as users report their devices will no longer be of use. Netflix is available on a wide range of devices, from TVs, to phones, to tablets. But one popular type of device is video game systems, which can be used to stream Netflix's newest original shows and movies.
Now, it's been reported by a multitude of users that Netflix will no longer be available on the PlayStation 3 starting from March 2, 2026. As seen in a post on r/crt, a pop-up message now appears when accessing the streaming service from the game console. It says the PS3 will no longer be a compatible device from that date onward:
Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices to see a list of supported devices. (R40)
The PlayStation 3 was released by Sony in 2006, celebrating its 20th anniversary in the United States on November 17 of this year. The console is two generations behind the current PlayStation 5, which was released in November 2020. Because of how old the device is, it's not a surprise Netflix is finally discontinuing their services for it.
However, the PS3 provides a unique experience for the platform's content, as it can be plugged into a CRT TV, offering a 4:3 aspect ratio and a retro feel for any movies and shows on the platform. The PS3 directly supports analog output, while the PS4 and PS5 require other tools, like an HDMI to Composite adapter, to work on older televisions.
Luckily, those still sporting the older gaming console will still be able to watch Netflix's upcoming shows for February 2026, such as The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 and The Night Agent season 3. But, when the month ends, they'll have just two days left to enjoy the streamer on their gaming system before it's gone for good.
This isn't the first time Netflix has been discontinued from a gaming console. They were removed from the Nintendo Wii in 2019, the Nintendo Wii U in 2021, and the Xbox 360 in 2024. This makes the PS3 the oldest seventh-generation console to still have access to the streaming platform, the last of its kind until March of this year.
Even though support for the PS3 will be ending, Netflix is still available on eighth-generation consoles like the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. There don't seem to be any immediate plans to discontinue support for them. But, with the PS3's time coming to a close, the streaming service will be looking to the future.
