The actor who plays Kang in the onscreen adaptation, Ludi Lin, has been praised for his take on the character. However, despite the role that he plays and the popularity of Kang, he is surprisingly not the actor's favorite video game character. In an interview with L'OFFICIEL, Lin said that he actually enjoys playing as Sub-Zero more than Kang, a warrior from the Lin Kuei clan. "I’ve played both Liu Kang and Sub-Zero in the games. To be honest, I prefer Sub-Zero," he explained.
Additionally, Lin says he understands just how much the role means to the avid players of Mortal Kombat. The actor said that one of his favorite things about franchises with large followings is to watch the fans' reactions to the films, especially the gaming community. He says that the movies are ultimately for them, so it's important to him to capture the spirit of the video games because of how much it means to them. He told the publication, "One of my favorite things is watching fans' reaction. When you see that explosion of enthusiasm, you realize how much it means to them that we get it right."
Mortal Kombat's Sub-Zero is one of the series’ most recognizable and enduring characters, with multiple versions of him throughout the franchise’s history. Created by Midway Games and later continued by NetherRealm Studios, the character is known for ice-based powers. Unlike many fighters who rotate in and out of the roster, Sub-Zero has appeared in every mainline installment. The character also played a central role in the spin-off action-adventure title Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
Throughout the series, the Sub-Zero mantle has been split between two brothers: Bi-Han and Kuai Liang. Bi-Han first appeared as the original iteration in the 1992 arcade game before later transforming into the shadowy fighter Noob Saibot in the following games. After his brother’s downfall, Kuai Liang became Sub-Zero instead and became the franchise’s primary version of the character for decades.
However, this changed in the 2023 video game, Mortal Kombat 1, which reimagined several classic characters and storylines. In the reboot, Bi-Han returned as Sub-Zero, while Kuai Liang took on the role of Scorpion.
Mortal Kombat 2 will premiere in theaters on May 8, 2026.
