The Monsterverse is about to experience a unique new story.
Franchise star Anna Sawai teases a rare, new story for the Titans featured in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. Monarch season 2 is adding major new lore elements to the Monsterverse with the appearance of Titan X, a monster even bigger than Godzilla and Kong. The core human characters will also be trying to stop the new Titan.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary on the show's red carpet premiere, Sawai teased that Monarch season 2 will give the Titans their own story. She explained how the series would bring a broader focus to the monsters, making their conflict understandable and giving the audience some major (and massive) figures to root for:
What’s special about this season is that we get to understand the monsters’ story, and that’s where people will be able to jump in. The monsters have their own story, and when we find out, it’s going to be like, “Oh, wow, okay, I’m rooting for them.”
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' characters have always been the show's biggest focus. From Cate Randa (Sawai) to Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell in the present, Wyatt Russell in the past), the show has delivered plenty of human heroes front-and-center. The monsters have had their time to shine, but not as brightly as in the Monsterverse's theatrical movies.
Based on Sawai's statement, though, this seems like it'll change moving forward. Monarch season 1 ended with Cate, May (Kiersey Clemons), and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) escaping a time-diluted pocket of the Hollow Earth, with Lee seemingly sacrificing himself. They arrive back on the surface to discover two years had passed above ground, while only days passed below.
They also ended up resurfacing on Skull Island, where Apex Cybernetics appear to be conducting research. This indicates Kong will have a major presence in the series moving forward, especially as Titan X begins its approach to his home island. He could also act as the tangible connection that leads to a more Titan-centered story.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is one of multiple forthcoming Monsterverse projects. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027, while Apple TV is developing a spinoff series about Wyatt Russell's young Lee Shaw. The inclusion of new Titan-focused stories bodes well for the franchise's future.
With Monarch: Legacy of Monsters promising a major focus on Titans for season 2, it remains to be seen what Sawai's statement means for how the story will develop. However, the deeper connection between the audience and the monsters featured will make Titan X's approach all the more meaningful as the story unfolds.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres Friday, February 27 on Apple TV.
