Monk & Psych’s Only Team-Up Is A Reminder Of How Badly We Needed A Crossover

1 week ago 11

For years, fans of Monk and Psych wanted a crossover between the shows that never really happened. Released in 2002, Monk follows Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk, a private consultant with obsessive-compulsive disorder who uses his unique abilities to solve cases. With its fresh angle and eccentric lead character, Monk set itself apart as one of the best detective shows.

Similar to Monk, Psych was a fresh take on the crime procedural genre and had a successful run on USA Network. Both series have continued to be popular even after their finales and have even released streaming movies. During the time Monk and Psych were airing, a crossover didn't happen, even though USA Network teased the possibility of one.

There Was Also A Monk Reference In Psych’s Series Finale

The only crossover that happened between Psych and Monk was the promos they did for USA Network in the late 2000s. The commercials see Shawn and Monk interact and play off each other's quirks. In a way, Psych was born out of Monk’s success, which explains why USA Network wanted to use that to their advantage.

There's a fan theory that states that Monk and Psych might exist in the same universe. This theory was fueled by the two shows’ similarities and the Monk reference in the Psych season 8 finale. Seeing as both shows aired on USA Network, the broadcast channel capitalized on this theory and created promos that teased that this was a possibility. However, the commercials were the only time that the eccentric characters shared the screen.

Monk And Psych Deserved A Real Crossover For How Similar They Were

A Monk And Psych Crossover Would've Been A Brilliant Idea

Despite their similarities, there has never been a Monk and Psych crossover episode apart from the promos they did for USA Network. One thing the promos did was show how well the crossover between the two series would have worked. Like Monk, Psych’s lead character, Shawn, has quirks he uses to help detectives solve cases. Both shows also have a similar tone, adding humor and lighthearted characters into the crime drama formula.

Why Monk’s Theme Song Changed After Season 1

Monk's original theme song was only around for one season before it was replaced by Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There." Here's why.

Although it's been several years since both shows concluded, the possibility of a crossover still remains. While speaking to Comicbook.com, Andy Beckman, the creator of Monk, admitted that he is a fan of Psych, and while he doesn't know how a crossover would work, he hasn't ruled out that it might happen. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie confirmed that the titular character is still working on cases and living in San Francisco, further proving that Shawn and Monk could maybe work together one day, seeing that they are both living in the same city.
