Audiences may not have seen the last of one Dexter: Resurrection villain.
Created by Clyde Phillips, the revival of the hit showtime series premiered last summer, following Michael C. Hall's beloved serial killer as he starts a new life in New York City. Dexter defeats an array of villains in season 1, but Eric Stonestreet's Rapunzel is one who got away, leading to questions about a Dexter: Resurrection season 2 return.
Speaking with TV Insider, Stonestreet teases that Rapunzel could return in future episodes of the Dexter revival. "Nobody really ever gets away from Dexter," Stonestreet explains. "That’s a reality. I mean, when I was sitting there, on set, I was like, ‘How many people have gotten away from Dexter?’ And producers like, ‘Not many.’ So who knows what’s in Al’s future is all I can say about that.”
Rapunzel, whose real name is Al, was last seen driving back to his home in Wisconsin at the end of Dexter: Resurrection season 1. Though Dexter tries to convince him to stay in town a while longer in order to kill him, Al escapes and throws his burner phone out the window, seemingly home free.
With Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) and most of his cabal of serial killers all dead by the season 1 finale, it's not clear what would bring Rapunzel, a long-time member, back to New York City. When the credits roll, Al still seemingly believes Dexter is Red, so it's possible he could be lured back under false pretenses.
Even if Rapunzel doesn't return for season 2, Hall's character seems like he'll have his hands full in the upcoming episodes. Uma Thurman will be reprising her role as Charley, Prater's former head of security from Dexter: Resurrection season 1's cast, and season 2 newcomers include Brian Cox as the New York Ripper and Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer.
Dexter: Resurrection season 2 is currently in production in New York City and is expected to premiere later this year in October. With filming only just recently having gotten underway, audiences shouldn't expect a trailer for the sophomore season for at least another couple of months.
If Stonestreet's Rapunzel does return, there could be quite a reckoning for Dexter as his true identity is revealed. While it remains unclear whether Al's return will happen in season 2 or some future season of Dexter: Resurrection, Hall's titular antihero will evidently have no shortage of antagonists to face off against in the episodes to come.
