Micron Technology (MU) shares traded at $932.50, up 0.53%, after recovering from an intraday decline below $925. The move followed Micron’s demonstration of a new 512GB DDR5 server memory module. AMD and Intel are validating the product across next-generation server platforms.
Micron Demonstrates 512GB DDR5 Server Memory Module
Micron demonstrated what it described as the world’s first 512GB DDR5 module across several server platforms. The product targets data centers running large databases, analytics, simulations, and demanding computing workloads. Micron designed the module to increase memory capacity without requiring larger server footprints.
The new RDIMM supports speeds reaching 9,200 megatransfers per second, according to the company. Micron uses vertical interconnect packaging to stack DRAM dies inside individual memory packages. Through-silicon vias connect those dies while maintaining the performance required by modern server systems.
A 24-slot dual-socket server could support up to 12TB of DDR5 memory using the modules. That capacity could keep larger datasets inside main memory for longer periods. As a result, servers could reduce transfers between memory and slower storage systems.
AMD and Intel Validate Micron’s New Memory Technology
AMD and Intel are working with Micron to validate the 512GB DDR5 RDIMM on future server platforms. The companies are testing compatibility, performance, and deployment requirements across upcoming data center systems. Their involvement expands the ecosystem supporting Micron’s high-capacity memory technology.
AMD said higher memory capacity can support growing data center computing requirements and complex workloads. The company continues integrating memory advances with its processor platforms for enterprise and cloud systems. Micron expects the collaboration to support balanced computing performance across high-density server environments.
Intel is also testing the module as memory demands increase across data-intensive applications. Higher capacity and bandwidth can reduce performance limits caused by insufficient memory resources. Micron expects this validation work to support broader adoption when the module reaches commercial production.
Micron Targets Higher Performance and Lower Server Power
Micron said one 512GB RDIMM can reduce operating power by more than 60% versus four 128GB modules. The design also gives server operators more memory capacity within existing hardware configurations. That approach could improve efficiency without requiring additional physical server space.
Micron also reported performance gains for workloads that depend heavily on system memory. Spark Support Vector Machine workloads delivered up to 1.4 times higher performance than 256GB DDR5 configurations. Databases and caching platforms could also handle larger datasets and higher transaction volumes.
Demand for server memory continues rising as companies process larger models, databases, and real-time computing tasks. JPMorganChase said higher-capacity memory could improve resource use and support larger in-memory workloads. Micron plans volume production of the 512GB RDIMMs during the second half of 2027.
