Michael B. Jordan's Global Smash Hit Is On Track To Make Netflix History

3 weeks ago 25

Michael B. Jordan is having a rather terrific 2026. He won his first Oscar for his leading performance in Sinners during the 97th Academy Awards in March. Rather than have a long gap between that record win and his next project, Netflix made sure to capitalize on his raised profile by releasing a new movie headlined by him just months later.

That film is known as Swapped, which is an animated fantasy movie where Jordan voices one of the two lead creatures. Directed by Tangled's Nathan Greno, co-starring Ted Lasso's Juno Temple, and produced by John Lassetter through Skydance Animation, the feature came to Netflix on May 1 with hopes of becoming the streamer's next big animated smash hit.

Netflix had a remarkable breakthrough in that department last year thanks to KPop Demon Hunters. The animated action musical demolished records to become the streamer's most-watched movie of all time, totaling 325.1 million views in its first 91 days of release. Swapped was never expected to soar that high, but it's putting up a great fight.

Through its first nearly three weeks of release, Swapped has lit up Netflix's streaming charts. It broke records for viewership in its first three and seven days, and has remained incredibly popular beyond then. Swapped has pulled in 80.6 million views in its first 17 days, according to Netflix's weekly charts, and has been the streamer's biggest film for two straight weeks. That puts it on a potentially historic path.

Swapped Could Become A Top 3 Most-Watched Netflix Movie

At first glance, 80.6 million views for Swapped after two and a half weeks on Netflix might not sound like a lot. It's at a fifth of KPop Demon Hunters' final total, but it's already halfway to cracking Netflix's top 10 most-watched movies chart. If it just doubles its views over the remaining 74 days, it will finish with a total good enough to move into the top 5 all-time.

That is a rather safe projection, too. Projections from What's On Netflix that use historical patterns give the movie a most likely outcome of generating 164.3 million views over its first 91 days. However, projections also have a notable best-case scenario where Swapped finishes with potentially 210.3 million views. If that happens, Jordan's animated movie will leap all the way into Netflix's top 3.

Swapped doesn't even need to reach the peak of the "Bull Case" projection to hit that achievement. It only needs around 173 million views to do so. If it wants any chance of climbing higher, strong word of mouth and continued relevancy over the next 10 weeks will be necessary. That's more realistic based on how well Swapped has done so far.

Why Swapped's Viewership On Netflix Has Been So Good

The streaming success that Swapped has experienced early on is proof of just how much viewers are enjoying the adventure. While critics were more mixed (ScreenRant's review gave it a 3 out of 10), the general public has really embraced the feature. It currently sits at 88% on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes; that's significantly higher than the 67% critics' score.

Perhaps the most important factor for Swapped's viewership is the landscape of animation upon its release. There are no other major, new animated movies on Netflix to steal subscribers' attention. And with school ending for most kids this month, there is even more time for them to enjoy the family-friendly film once or multiple times.

Swapped has been able to effortlessly sweep in and fill the void of fresh animated movies for families to watch. It's been well over a month since The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hit theaters, and there's not another major animated release until Toy Story 5 on June 19. And with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Hoppers still not on streaming, its competition is more limited; Sony's GOAT (which came to Netflix on May 14) is its only real threat.

Add in the star power attached to the voice cast, and it should not come as a surprise that Swapped has done so well. The only question left for the movie is just how high up Netflix's all-time charts it can fly over the next few months.
