The Scarlet Witch is officially dead in the MCU, if one hidden detail in Agatha All Along is anything to go by. Scarlet Witch died at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after collapsing the Darkhold Castle on top of herself in her efforts to destroy the Darkhold in every universe. Her death came with a hefty amount of skepticism, however, as audiences theorized that she could have survived the ordeal in myriad ways - especially because the Darkhold prophecy that predicts the Scarlet Witch will either rule or destroy the cosmos remains unfulfilled.

Agatha All Along contributed to this skepticism after throwing her death into question a couple of times. Agatha's doubt in Agatha All Along episode 1 suggested that she knew how difficult it was for the Scarlet Witch to die, despite ostensibly seeing her body. Billy Maximoff then questioned whether Wanda was really dead in Agatha All Along episode 7, to which Agatha replied "Yes. No. Maybe." Yet the permanence of her death was confirmed in a line that might have felt inconsequential if it didn't come from the foremost authority on the matter.

Death Confirmed Scarlet Witch Is "Gone"

Along With Every Copy Of The Darkhold

Agatha All Along episode 1 introduced Rio Vidal as a cast member in Agatha's personal Westview hex, at which point her true identity as Death herself was still under wraps. Still, when speaking with Agatha in a mortuary containing what appears to be Wanda's body (implied through her "scarlet" hair and a toe tag bearing the name "W. Maximoff"), Rio confirms "That witch is gone, and all of the copies of the Darkhold with her." Given the Darkhold has been destroyed, this underpins precisely what Rio means by "gone."

Westview resident John Collins - embodying the hex-borne character Herb at the time - also stated that Wanda was " Really, most sincerely dead ."

It was later revealed that Rio Vidal is the personification of Death. Given Death's intimate knowledge of who is and isn't "gone," it would appear that the matter has been settled. Rio's authority on the matter, aside from being implied, was also established when she assured Agatha that Billy - whose identity was still secret at the time - was not hers, meaning Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch. Rio's assurance would have stemmed from the fact that she knows who does and doesn't dwell in her realm or some other form of afterlife in the MCU.

Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch May Only Return Through The Multiverse

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Confirmed The Existence Of Scarlet Witch Variants

Scarlet Witch's death, like the death of most other MCU characters in the Multiverse Saga, still doesn't prevent her return. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness established that Scarlet Witch has variants across the multiverse, which facilitates the possibility that any one of them could fill Earth-616 Wanda's role down the line. This would be most likely to occur in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will presumably bring variants from across the multiverse together on Doom's Battleworld, or whatever variation of Battleworld is used.

Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, has had a long and exciting story so far in the MCU that's seen her bounce between hero and terrifying villain.

Still, it feels more pertinent to feature the Scarlet Witch's return in the upcoming solo series for Vision. This show will conclude a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, with Wanda and her family being pivotal to the plot of all three. This could mean that multiversal shenanigans may be on the cards in the threequel series. Then again, it may also suggest that Rio's careful choice of words - specifically avoiding the word "dead" - may have been entirely intentional after all.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Scarlet Witch debuted, along with her twin brother, Quicksilver in X-Men #4 (March 1964). Also known as Wanda Maximoff, she first appears as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before she eventually became a member of the Avengers. In the comics, she is a mutant who uses chaos magic to alter reality.

Scarlet Witch is played by Elizabeth Olsen in the MCU, having debuted in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
