Marvel's Wolverine Logan facing down a Sentinel enemy

After years of anticipation, Marvel's Wolverine was fully revealed last year, unveiling tons of new information about Insomniac's next superhero title, which is finally approaching release. From story details that include iconic comic characters to intense gameplay footage, players have a lot to look forward to in this brutal take on the X-Men's most popular figure.

A new in-depth look at gameplay was shared during PlayStation's June 2026 State of Play event, which opened with Marvel's Wolverine. Made by the creators of the Marvel's Spider-Man series, this title offers a darker, grittier adventure starring the razor-sharp claws of the mutant Wolverine.

Marvel's Wolverine Release Date

Marvel's Wolverine will be released on September 15, 2026, as revealed by Insomniac Games back in February. This will place its release date nearly three whole years after Marvel Spider-Man 2's, and it enters a crowded time for gaming, as numerous major titles are filling the September and October months in an attempt to avoid competing with Grand Theft Auto 6 in November.

Marvel's Wolverine can currently be wishlisted on the PlayStation Store, which should make it easier to receive updates in the future. Insomniac's latest will arrive after PlayStation has re-embraced exclusives, meaning Wolverine will most likely not come to PC in the future. This is a major change from the Marvel's Spider-Man series, all three entries of which have received PC ports.

Marvel's Wolverine Preorders & Edition Differences

You can go one step further than wishlisting by preordering Marvel's Wolverine, entitling you to the Classic Brown suit for Logan, a couple of early unlocks – Reflective Claws and one Technique Point – and four PlayStation avatars featuring Wolverine, Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabretooth. Techniques are Wolverine's version of skills, so preordering will get you a head-start on the game's skill tree. The standard version of Marvel's Wolverine costs $69.99.

For $10 more, the Digital Deluxe Edition of Marvel's Wolverine can be had at a price of $79.99. In addition to all the preorder bonuses, the Digital Deluxe Edition comes with the following items:

  • Five suits – Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, New Leather
  • Five claws – Smooth-Edged, Hollow Blade, Thick, Serrated Spine, Tapered
  • Three more Technique Points

The above cosmetics, the suits and claws, are exclusive to the Deluxe Edition, though many more are expected to be included in the game and unlockable through in-game progression.

Marvel's Wolverine Gameplay & Story Details

Gameplay trailers show off a brutal display of third-person combat, similar in nature to Marvel's Spider-Man, but with a far darker edge. Wolverine doesn't just attack his foes, he chops up whatever threat is in front of him to ribbons, using fluid, fast-paced attacks that utilize his signature adamantium claws.

Each of Wolverine's mutant abilities are mentioned to be present in Marvel's Wolverine, from his resilient adamantium skeleton to his savage berserker rage and regenerative healing factor. Fast combo attacks seem to emphasize Wolverine's speed, as he uses the environment to gain an upper hand against anyone who threatens him.

One of the most noticeable gameplay elements in the trailer is the presence of gory finishing moves Wolverine uses to take out foes. This is similar to gameplay systems in Marvel's Spider-Man, reflecting a familiar pacing to combat.

As for its story, Marvel's Wolverine follows Logan as a dark past threatens to consume him, leading him on a journey to discover lost memories. This mysterious angle to Wolverine's journey leads him hunting down clues while being hunted himself, turning locations he visits into bloody battlegrounds.

Marvel's Wolverine is confirmed to have players visit several iconic locations from Logan's history, from the frozen Canadian wilderness, to the bustling streets of Tokyo, and the island nation of Madripoor. These spots are likely to have some familiar faces, alongside many different missions unique to each location.

Travel doesn't appear to be as freeform as Marvel's Spider-Man, but several shots in the trailer show Wolverine running along rooftops, implying that he has ways to get around areas. Marvel's Wolverine doesn't seem to have a contiguous open world, but is rather split into bespoke levels. Wolverine can build his berserker rage as he fights, using furious momentum to dispatch whatever enemies dare take him on.

Every Character Revealed In Marvel's Wolverine

Marvel's Wolverine Mystique showing up within the game's story

Several characters have made cameo appearances in gameplay trailers, including some figures that will undoubtedly become obstacles in Wolverine's path. Instantly recognizable faces from X-Men and Wolverine comics seem to have a place in the game's story, including:

  • Sentinel Prototype
  • Mystique
  • Omega Red
  • Jean Grey
  • Sabretooth

Obviously, the Sentinel seen at the end of the first gameplay trailer may pose the biggest threat to Wolverine, as the robot is one of many designed to eliminate mutants like Logan. However, Omega Red is a more personal enemy, whose immediate violence against Wolverine could easily make him into a challenging boss fight within the story.

Since Logan will visit places like Japan, characters such as Dakan or Silver Samurai could also make an appearance.

Meanwhile, Mystique seems to be some sort of ally to Wolverine, at least taking out the same high-tech enemies Logan is seen fighting throughout the trailer. The shapeshifter has not exactly been trustworthy in her complicated comic history, though, so it remains to be seen if she will be more helpful than harmful to the six-clawed traveler.

Speaking of the enemies both Mystique and Wolverine fight, some of them seem to resemble the character Razor Fist, who first debuted in a Wolverine comic. This singular character may have been turned into a larger force, as story details describe Logan going up against a group called the Reavers, who act as an enemy faction.

The extended gameplay showcase at the June 2026 State of Play gave a closer look at the Reavers, who during the showcased mission are trafficking a group of captured mutants. An accompanying PlayStation Blog post describes the Reavers as "a guns-for-hire cybernetic militia" with "plans to deliver the mutants to their client, Bolivar Trask – a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority."

Marvel's Wolverine's extended gameplay trailer also gave us our first look at Jean Grey in action. PlayStation Blog implies she will be a major supporting character throughout the game, and her telekinetic powers even assist in combat, opening opportunities for the player to perform Critical Strikes. Alongside the Jean Grey reveal was confirmaton that Sabretooth will appear in the game, but his debut was less insightful.

While most of the voice cast for the game remains officially unrevealed, it's been confirmed that Australian actor Liam McIntyre will be playing Logan. Leaks have suggested the inclusion of other actors like Troy Baker and Jolean Kim, but these remain speculative for now.

There are an almost unlimited number of characters that could be in the game, from other X-Men figures like Professor X to more disconnected Marvel references, like Spider-Man, who is sharing Insomniac's universe with Logan. No matter who shows up in Marvel's Wolverine, you can rest assured that Logan will be doing the best at what he does, and what he does won't be very nice.
