Honestly, it feels like forever ago (time, eh?) developer Insomniac announced it would be following up its excellent Spider-Man games by taking on a very different kind of Marvel hero. But five years later, Wolverine is almost ready to pounce, and the studio is stoking excitement for the PS5 game's September release with our first chunk of uninterrupted gameplay - seven minutes, in fact - which includes the arrival of a familiar X-Men face.
Anticipation has been high for Marvel's Wolverine ever since its initial unveiling back in 2021, and that only intensified when Insomniac offered a first proper look at the game during last November's State of Play showcase. Nine months on, Wolverine is back and this time with actual gameplay, so let's just hope tickers hold out following its latest showcase reveal.
Insomniac's seven or so minutes of uninterrupted Wolverine gameplay sees our claw-fisted antihero in a race against time to rescue a group of kidnapped mutants. It's stuffed with plenty of ultra-violence, as Wolverine jabs his claws straight through faces, severs body parts, and worse. There's so much spewing blood, in fact, it barely even registered when one of his X-Men pals - Jean Grey, to be precise - emerged to join in the fun. Grey's role in Insomniac's Wolverine has long been rumoured, but not officially confirmed until today.
Is there much else to say about this latest look? Not currently, but if you keep your eyes on Eurogamer this evening, then perhaps there'll be more to say.
