James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

It's quite an exciting time for Spider-Man fans in general, with Brand New Day set to release on July 31, with the only potential obstacle to its success being the willingness of the people to go to the cinema in the Summer heat. That should serve as an absolute license to print money for Marvel, but on the video game front, things are a little quieter.

Thus far, Insomniac Games have produced two Marvel's Spider-Man games thus far, but the studio has now moved on to Wolverine, which means we probably won't get a third part of the trilogy for a while yet. That said, if you do fancy heading back and playing the most recent game in the series to get in the mood for the new film, you don't have to buy it outright.

Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service may have gallingly gone up in price in recent months, but there's still a lot of fun to be had if you decided to stick with it through the tough times. As part of that offering, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is available at no additional cost as part of the catalog, for those subscribed to the Extra or Premium tiers.

Not only that, but the original is also available as part of the service at the same level, so you can go for a double feature if you've yet to play either for some reason. The first game brings us to an already quite experienced version of Peter Parker, with a lesser known villain in the role of the main antagonist, and some genuinely great, high-stakes storytelling that really nails the overall vibe.

The sequel is just as good, if not better, in the gameplay department, and the narrative holds up well enough without really hitting the same emotional heights of the first game. It also has Miles Morales, and we can all agree that usually only results in a net positive outcome, regardless of the medium.

As first party games, they are likely to stick around on the service for a long while yet, so there's no rush in that respect, though you will want to start soon if you want to get them both done before the next film comes out.

Other than that, the only real potential gaming release we have to look forward to is the third part of the Marvel's Spider-Man trilogy. As mentioned earlier, it's best not to get your hopes up for anything soon on that front, leaving the two existing games as your best bet in the meantime.
