2026 is a massive year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in so many ways, with the start of a new era for the franchise already coming this month with an exciting May release. There is no denying that the focus of the MCU's slate of releases this year is on the shared universe's theatrical side of the franchise.

The film unites characters from all over the MCU and the multiverse, bringing back the franchise's two main stars, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., with the latter playing Doctor Doom. Still, there is plenty to enjoy when it comes to MCU TV shows and standalone Marvel series, such as X-Men '97 season 2. Months before the anticipated movies arrive, it is the franchise's TV corner that starts a new MCU era.

While Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is currently airing, it will be the next MCU project that begins this fresh chapter in the franchise's history. That would be The Punisher: One Last Kill, which will be released on Disney+ on Tuesday, May 12. Jon Bernthal's return as Frank Castle, which he co-wrote, is key to unlocking the franchise's future.

The Punisher: One Last Kill Starts A New Chapter For The MCU

The Special Presentation featuring the Punisher not only marks a return of the format that had been used in the past for the Guardians of the Galaxy and Werewolf by Night, but it also serves as the start of a new era for the MCU due to the group its lead character belongs to. Bernthal's Punisher is one of the active Marvel heroes that began their journey in the franchise in Netflix's The Defenders Saga.

Charlie Cox's Daredevil also came from the same pocket of the franchise, appearing in multiple MCU movies and TV shows before he got to lead his own solo series, Daredevil: Born Again, on Disney+. Now, The Punisher: One Last Kill serves as the first project led by a non-Daredevil character from The Defenders Saga since Marvel brought them back and confirmed the shows as MCU canon.

The Punisher: One Last Kill also streamlines the MCU's return-to-solo-project pipeline for characters from The Defenders Saga. While Cox returned as Matt Murdock in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home and then appeared in multiple MCU shows before leading Daredevil: Born Again season 1 in 2025, Bernthal came back as the Punisher in the Daredevil series and, a year later, is already seeing his second MCU project since returning be a solo Punisher release.

The Punisher's Special Presentation Opens The Door For Four Characters To Lead New MCU Solo Projects

Defenders 2017 MCU Netflix Poster

The Punisher: One Last Kill could mark the start of a wave of new releases focused on characters from Netflix's The Defenders Saga. The four Marvel characters who could benefit from that are Jessica Jones, who returned to the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, who were spotted in Daredevil: Born Again season 3 set photos, and Bullseye, who is one of the MCU's most complex characters and has become a fan-favorite with immense growth in the street-level series.

The Punisher getting a solo project allows The Defenders Saga characters to become main players in the MCU again, as it is not only Daredevil that Marvel has its sights on. Jessica Jones, with her powers faltering and a daughter to raise, could lead a compelling TV show. Having worked for Mr. Charles, Luke Cage would be perfect for a Heroes for Hire series alongside Iron Fist. As for Bullseye, his complex morality and hyper-violence would suit a Special Presentation like The Punisher: One Last Kill.
