Marvel’s supernatural side has never struggled to find trouble for its heroes. Doctor Strange can barely finish dealing with one threat before another dimension becomes everyone’s problem, while Thor’s family connections make divine intervention considerably less reassuring. Put those corners of the universe together, and there’s plenty of room for an adventure that goes beyond another fight on Earth.

For Magic: The Gathering, those characters also seem like an obvious match. A game built around casting spells already has plenty in common with Marvel’s sorcerers and gods, even before considering the creatures they encounter. But bringing familiar characters into a card game presents an opportunity to do something more ambitious than recreate their greatest hits.

Wizards of the Coast has announced Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story and setting. Revealed at New York Comic Con on October 9, the collaboration centers on Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu, with a narrative spanning nearly 30 dimensions. Marvel and Wizards developed the storyline together, and a companion comic will bring the adventure to readers alongside the cards.

‘Marvel Darkhold Destiny’ Gives the Crossover Its Own Comic Book Story

The original storyline is the biggest distinction in an announcement packed with Marvel products. According to Wizards, the teams began with the design intentions behind the Magic experience and expressed them through the Marvel Universe. That gives the collaboration a different starting point from adapting an existing adventure, with the story and setting developed specifically for this project. The four central characters also give the set a clear supernatural focus. Doctor Strange and Dormammu bring an established rivalry into the mix, while Thor and Hela connect the adventure to Marvel’s mythology. Wizards hasn’t revealed the full plot, so how those characters cross paths remains under wraps. The companion comic’s first chapter will release digitally, with the physical edition arriving April 7, 2027, during the set’s launch week.

Fans won’t have to wait until spring for the next Marvel release, however. The Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes goes on sale November 2 at 9 a.m. PT for $199.99, with limited quantities available. The collection contains 30 cards featuring illustrations from more than 30 artists, celebrating moments including the Fantastic Four’s transformation and Jean Grey becoming the Phoenix. Wizards also previewed Doomsdrop, a collection of drops predominantly featuring Doctor Doom alongside other Marvel guests.

Doom’s tabletop appearances will extend to theaters as well. The announcement includes a Doctor Doom Magic: The Gathering card giveaway at Regal Cinemas for audiences seeing Avengers: Doomsday opening weekend in Infinity Vision. That promotion gives moviegoers another way into the collaboration before Darkhold Destiny arrives next year. For players interested in Marvel’s magical side, though, the original story is the announcement that moves this partnership into new territory.

Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters December 18, 2026.
