John Krasinski first became known to audiences due to his role on The Office. The actor portrayed the lovable Jim Halpert in the hit NBC sitcom across all nine of its seasons. After the show ended in 2013, however, Krasinski expanded his position in Hollywood, taking on new kinds of roles and trying his hand at directing. Krasinski directed and starred in A Quiet Place in 2018, which launched a hit horror franchise, and he also spearheaded Prime Video's Jack Ryan TV show. The Tom Clancy adaptation wasn't Krasinski's first outing as an action hero, however.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) marks Krasinski's action debut, and the film is now set to return to streaming with its arrival on Paramount+ on November 1. Directed by Michael Bay, the R-rated war film sees Krasinski taking on the role of a former Navy SEAL named Jack Silva. The movie is not currently available on any major streamers, making its Paramount+ release a big change in its availability.

13 Hours Is A Harrowing Real-Life Action Thriller

13 Hours is based on real events and adapts 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff, which chronicles the 2012 terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Six private security contractors responded to the attack, defending Americans against waves of enemies for 13 hours until they were rescued. The attack claimed the lives of four Americans, including two of the former Navy SEAL contractors and a U.S. Ambassador.

Also starring James Bade Dale, David Denman, Pablo Schreiber, Dominic Fumasa, Max Martini, David Costabile, and Alexia Barlier, 13 Hours was not a box office hit. Despite adapting material straight from the headlines, the film only grossed about $69 million against an estimated budget of $50 million. 13 Hours was not a big win with critics, currently sporting a lackluster 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Popcornmeter is higher, however, at 83%.

13 Hours Turned John Krasinski Into An Action Star

Though 13 Hours wasn't a major theatrical success, the movie nevertheless helped to further remove Krasinski from the funny nice guy persona he had built up on The Office. Krasinski takes on the role of an ultra-serious and ruthless former SEAL, a character that paved the way for his take on Jack Ryan. Prime Video's Jack Ryan series positions Ryan as more of an action hero, especially in later seasons and the recent Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026) feature film.

Jack Ryan was a viewership hit for Prime Video, suggesting that Krasinski is believable as an action star to audiences. The actor doesn't have any other action projects on the immediate horizon, but 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi coming to Paramount+ next month suggests the film is about to reach a much wider audience, further cementing this aspect of Krasinski's acting persona.
