The timing makes sense. Manga has become a massive part of global pop culture, with series like One Piece, Naruto, and Attack on Titan drawing fans far beyond Japan. Marvel has experimented with manga before, including its Deadpool: Samurai collaboration, but this new partnership takes things further by putting Japanese creators in charge of fresh takes on some of its most recognizable characters.
The five-title lineup includes Spider-Man, Venom, Iron Man, Spider-Gwen, and Deadpool, with the stories ranging from familiar origin stories to new adventures set in Japan. The manga launched on Kadokawa's KadoComi platform in Japanese in October 2026, marking a new chapter for Marvel's Asian Originals initiative.
Marvel Trades The Standard Comic Playbook For A Massive 5-Series Manga Debut
Marvel's new manga lineup isn't just about giving Spider-Man bigger eyes and drawing Iron Man with extra-detailed armor. The five series, launched on Kadokawa's KadoComi platform on October 11, 2026, give Japanese creators room to tell stories that feel different from the usual Marvel comics. Four revisit familiar characters, while Spider-Man: Shibuya Cross Line introduces a brand-new hero in Japan.
Venom: Lethal Protector by Peperon takes Eddie Brock back to rock bottom before he bonds with the symbiote, while TERU's Iron Man: I Am Iron Man revisits Tony Stark's capture in Afghanistan. Both stories act as retellings of established origin arcs, but the manga format gives artists a different way to handle the action and character designs.
The other two series take their own routes. In Deadpool: Millionaire With a Mouth, Hōsuke Momoi turns Wade Wilson into a global superstar who starts his own hero-for-hire business. Meanwhile, Ryūsei Yamada's Spider-Gwen: Her Big Debut follows Gwen as she juggles crime-fighting, high school, and her band while dealing with her police officer father.
The most interesting pick, though, is Spider-Man: Shibuya Cross Line by tokitokoro. Peter Parker isn't the lead here. Instead, Japanese high schooler Haruto Hachidori gains spider powers after being bitten at a shrine and gets caught up in a serial murder investigation. His path eventually crosses with Daredevil, giving this version of Spider-Man a much darker, street-level story set in Tokyo.
Dropping Decades Of Continuity Homework Is The Smartest Move Marvel Could Make For Manga Fans
Marvel has never been shy about throwing its heroes into alternate universes, but this manga lineup gives the idea a fun new twist. Spider-Man has spent decades getting bitten by a radioactive spider, losing Uncle Ben, and learning that great power comes with great responsibility. Now, Spider-Man: Shibuya Cross Line is handing the mask to a new Japanese teenager, while Deadpool: Millionaire With a Mouth has Wade Wilson living the kind of celebrity life that would probably go straight to his head. These aren't just familiar Marvel stories with manga artwork slapped on top.
The partnership with Kadokawa also makes sense for a publisher trying to reach more manga readers. Japan has its own comic giants, and competing with One Piece or Jujutsu Kaisen takes more than putting a Marvel logo on a cover. Giving Japanese creators room to work with these characters is a much better way to stand out, especially when the stories can be read without years of Marvel continuity homework.
Of course, the big question is whether these manga can hold up beyond the novelty of seeing familiar heroes in a new style. Marvel has plenty of alternate universes that look exciting on paper, but the ones that stick are the ones with a story worth remembering. A new Spider-Man in Tokyo is a good start. Now it's up to these series to make the most of it.
