Poignant images have surfaced capturing the last time Martin Short's daughter Katherine was photographed publicly before her heartbreaking death at age 42.

The photos, taken on October 12, 2023, show Katherine celebrating her milestone 40th birthday alongside her famous father and a slew of other celebrities in Hollywood.

Katherine died by suicide at age 42 on Monday with representatives for her father confirmed the loss of his 'beloved' daughter.

Nearly three years earlier, Katherine was marking another trip around the sun at Grandmaster Recorders, a multipurpose venue featuring an Italian-Australian restaurant.

Guests included Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Bo Welch, Joni Mitchell, and the late Catherine O'Hara.

Video shows Katherine - who wore a sequined dress and a 'Birthday Girl' tiara - emerging from the restaurant with a huge smile on her face and various bags in hand.

The last images of Martin Short's daughter have emerged, showing her celebrating her milestone 40th birthday in a star-studded affair in Hollywood back in 2023

Her famous father was among the stars in attendance

In a statement, Martin's representatives confirmed the loss of his beloved daughter.

'It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,' the statement read. 'The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.'

According to authorities, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to Katherine's Hollywood Hills residence on Monday shortly after 6 p.m.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed to the Daily Mail that crews responded to a call at the address at approximately 6:41 p.m., but declined to identify the individual involved due to privacy concerns.

TMZ reported that Katherine died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During her life, Katherine worked as a licensed social worker in private practice. She also worked at Amae Health, a clinic she was employed at part-time, according to People

She received her master's in social work from USC in 2010 after obtaining a bachelor's degree in psychology and gender studies from New York University four years earlier, People reports.

Short adopted Katherine and her brothers, Oliver and Henry, with his late wife Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 after a battle with ovarian cancer.

The couple had been married for 30 years at the time of her death.

Following Dolman's passing, Short's longtime comedy partner Steve Martin paid tribute to her with a musical elegy titled The Great Remember (For Nancy), which appeared on one of his albums.

Guests included Hollywood icon Catherine O'Hara, who has since passed

Speaking in 2019 about Nancy, Short described his marriage to the actress as a 'triumph'. He admitted he still 'talks' to his late wife all the time and still feels her presence around him.

In an interview with AARP magazine, he said: 'With real tragedy, you become a little more daring. It's the yin to the yang: the positive part of life's dark side.'

He also previously told CBC his attitude to grief is: 'We go on.'
