EXCLUSIVE: Not only is Marshals season 2 bringing back a fan-favorite Yellowstone character, but is entering a new era in doing so.

Hailing from SEAL Team alum Spencer Hudnut, the CBS series has expanded Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western world with Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton as he rebuilds his life in the wake of his wife's death, being enlisted by his former SEAL team leader to join the U.S. Marshals. Alongside Grimes, the ensemble Marshals cast has included the return of Brecken Merrill as Kayce's son Tate, Gil Birmingham as Broken Rock Chief Thomas Rainwater, now owner of the Duttons' Yellowstone land, and Mo Brings Plenty as Rainwater's bodyguard Mo.

While the next chapter of Marshals looks to see Kayce transform some of his East Camp land into an equine therapy center for veterans, a loving tribute to his late wife, Kelsey Asbille's Monica, it will also see the return of Jefferson White as Jimmy from the original Yellowstone series to help with this. Ahead of the spinoff's return, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Luke Grimes and Ash Santos to discuss season 2, during which the conversation shifted to Jimmy's impending arrival.

Grimes began by offering the first details for White's Yellowstone return, explaining that Marshals season 2 finds Kayce "having a hard time juggling" the various things in his life, namely "running this ranch, being a father [and] being a marshal," and therefore turns to Jimmy for help. As for why the former Dutton cowboy offers his assistance, the star/executive producer cites one key element of Jimmy's past as doing so:

Luke Grimes: Jimmy feels he has a debt to John Dutton for saving his life and putting him on this great new path, and making him into this cowboy. Out of the debt to that, he comes to help Kayce out.

Grimes went on to express his excitement at Marshals season 2 helping to kickstart a new era for Kayce and Jimmy in Yellowstone as they "didn't have any relationship" in Sheridan's original show, with the pair "barely ever" sharing any scenes together. Grimes even chuckled as he acknowledged that Kayce was "in my own sort of world" with Monica and Tate that he never visited the bunkhouse, where many of Jimmy's scenes were set, and thus the spinoff allows them to build "this brand-new relationship" that "has been really fun."

Santos, who made her Yellowstone debut in Marshals' first season, beamed as she shared that White has "such vivacious energy" when filming a scene, sharing that her co-star is "so bright" on set and "kind of lights the whole set up." She also confirmed that Jimmy and Andrea, one of Kayce's fellow marshals team members, have "had a few scenes together" thus far:

Ash Santos: I love the little improv he throws into the scenes, because it's always so funny. And yeah, he's a wonderful actor.

While it was previously known that Jimmy's return would be in a recurring capacity for Marshals season 2, Grimes' above comments mark the first indication of the story's reasoning for his arrival. The Yellowstone character had moved to Texas toward the end of his original series tenure, and while the Beth and Rip-focused Dutton Ranch spinoff shifted the setting to the Lone Star State, the CBS series has remained rooted in Montana.

Much to Grimes' point, Kayce and Jimmy very rarely shared the screen together in the original Yellowstone series, but generally didn't prove necessary for them to do so. By the time Kayce got more involved with the Dutton operation on the original ranch, Jimmy had already begun exploring his interest in the world of rodeo cowboying, while Kayce was more focused on trying to rebuild his relationship with Monica and Tate in the wake of the latter's kidnapping and the Beck brothers' attempts on his family to acquire their land.

What still remains unclear is what Kayce and Jimmy's dynamic will look like upon the latter's Marshals season 2 arrival. While much of Yellowstone showed Grimes' character reconnecting with Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, by the end of both the original show and for much of the spinoff, he's sought to distance himself from both his father and his family's legacy. As such, White's character's return could force him to relive or confront some of the demons of their shared past.

The other major takeaway from the above discussions of Jimmy's return in Marshals season 2 is that Santos and White have shared some scenes together. Fans of both the Yellowstone spinoff and the franchise as a whole have been theorizing Santos' Andrea to eventually become the replacement for Monica as far as being Kayce's love interest, and with her already having spent some extra time on East Camp compared to his other teammates, the pair sharing multiple scenes together may point to this dynamic getting further developments this season.

New episodes of Marshals season 2 air Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
