Mariah Carey may be considered the queen of Billboard with multiple hits attached to her name, but there stands out one phenomenal flop in the mix.
The Glitter movie and accompanying soundtrack were both commercial and critical misfires with the film only grossing around $5 million against a $22 million budget and the album becoming the lowest selling of Carey's career.
But now, the 56-year-old star has come to appreciate her 2001 effort, even if all that glittered didn’t turn to gold at the time.
Carey spoke to Variety about plans to celebrate Glitter as it marks its 25-year anniversary.
'Plans for a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don’t know,' the We Belong Together singer said. 'We’re getting on top of it. I’m excited about it.'
Carey, who was mocked for using a teleprompter to phonetically spell out Italian lyrics during her Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony performance, thinks remastering some of her old music videos including Don't Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica) would be great to include in the celebration.

'Actually, it really would. No, we were just talking about it today. I really think it could be a moment,' Carey said.
The music legend admitted she once loathed Glitter 'because it was a disastrous flop.'
'I used to hate it. I used to be so like, why did I do that? And then, you know, it became something that I really loved and it just sort of took on its own thing,' Carey said, adding, 'It was just a tough time for me.'
Glitter marked Carey's feature film debut. It was a rags-to-riches love story along the lines of A Star is Born and set against the 1980s New York club scene.
She played a talented young singer named Billie Frank who overcomes a difficult childhood and rises to superstardom with the help of a DJ named Dice (Max Beesley), with whom she falls in love.
Over the years Glitter has grown a devoted fanbase who love the album for its music despite the film's dismal reception.
The fans see it as an underrated piece of Carey's work and they launched a successful #JusticeForGlitter campaign in 2018 that drove the album to No. 1 on iTunes.
Elsewhere in her interview with Variety, the mother of two, who has 14-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with ex-husband Nick Cannon, revealed she's working on new music.

The pop diva - who was nominated for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the third time this year - also revealed she's working on new music, telling Variety, 'I hope it will do well and people will like it' (pictured on January 30)
Her last album Here for It All was released in 2025 and was a commercial hit, debuting at No. 1 on four Billboard charts.
'I’m definitely recording new music and I'm very excited about it. And yeah, I'm kind of like always recording new music, but I hope it will do well and people will like it. But yeah, new music,' Carey shared.
She said she's still planning to release her lost grunge album, Someone's Ugly Daughter, but she's not sure when.
The pop diva, meanwhile, was nominated for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the third time this year among others including Lauryn Hill, Shakira, Phil Collins, Wu-Tang Clan, Luther Vandross, Pink and Jeff Buckley.
