Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are called out for 'lame' publicity stunts as fans accuse co-stars of copying Sydney Sweeney-style PR playbook

Wuthering Heights co-stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi have been accused of pulling a 'lame' publicity stunt after unveiling intimate matching rings and making gushing statements about each other.

Critics have claimed it is an over-the-top attempt to sell their on-screen chemistry.

Margot, 35, gifted her co-star Jacob, 28, a striking matching signet ring engraved with a romantic quote from the novel.

Each ring features two skeletons locked in an embrace, alongside the words: 'Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.'

The rings were created by UK designer Cece Fein-Hughes, who shared behind-the-scenes details of the jewellery on social media, confirming the piece was 'gifted to Jacob by Margot'.

'What an honour it was to create matching pieces for Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, celebrating their time filming together as Catherine and Heathcliff,' she wrote.

The rings also feature the engraved initials of Cathy and Heathcliff, along with the inscription '1847-2026', referencing the publication year of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and the upcoming film release.

One image in the gallery appeared to show Margot gently gripping Jacob's hand as they modelled the rings, while another showed the actress wearing a dramatic ruby choker paired with her period costume from the film.

Jacob also recently raised eyebrows during a press interview when he declared the pair had a 'mutual obsession' while filming.

Speaking to Fandango, with Margot sitting nearby, he said he made sure he was never more than 10 metres away from the Barbie actress on set.

'If you have the opportunity to share a film set with Margot Robbie, you're going to make sure you're within five to ten metres at all times,' he said.

'Watching how she drinks tea, how she eats her food. When is it going to slip? And it never comes undone.'

The matching jewellery and comments have left many far from impressed.

Several commenters have accused the pair of copying the now-infamous press tour playbook used by Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell during the promotion of Anyone But You.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros released a string of behind-the-scenes snaps from Wuthering Heights' filming, offering a glimpse at the much-anticipated adaptation

Jacob gushed over his co-star during a recent interview when he revealed he made sure he was no less than 10 metres away from the Barbie actress 'at all times'

'They are going way too hard with this film promotion. This is exactly like Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. It's all marketing,' one said.

'Overdoing it to sell their chemistry,' a third agreed.

'This shouldn't be necessary if the film is actually good.'

Others questioned the optics altogether, with one bluntly writing: 'Super creepy to say when you're married.'

Margot has been married to husband Tom Ackerley for almost ten years and the couple share one child together.

Several commenters also dismissed the entire spectacle as transparent PR.

'This is like Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga (in A Star Is Born) all over again,' one reader claimed.

'It's all part of the marketing machine.'

Another added: 'She wants you to think there's something going on so you'll watch their butchering of a classic.'

Margot, meanwhile, has been candid about returning to work just three months after welcoming her son in October 2024 with husband Tom Ackerley.

Speaking to British Vogue, she admitted she was initially fearful about filming Wuthering Heights so soon postpartum and addressed expectations surrounding the film's intimacy.

'Everyone's expecting this to be very, very raunchy,' she said. 'I think people will be surprised.'
