MAFS groom Danny Hewitt breaks silence on 'jail' vow backlash and denies friend-zoning Bec after brutal chemistry bombshell

Married At First Sight groom Danny Hewitt has addressed the moment that derailed his wedding to bride Bec Zacharia.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the Englishman, 34, insisted that his 'bail me out of jail' comment in his vows was never meant to be taken seriously and said it was 'weird' watching the episode and seeing how strongly Bec reacted in the moment.

'It was strange watching it back… it brings back all the memories,' Danny said, adding that seeing Bec walk down the aisle was a standout moment.

'She looked beautiful in her dress. I was just trying to take it all in. I knew it was going to be a moment I hopefully only do once in my life.'

Danny's vows quickly set Bec on edge, with the bride later seen breaking down after interpreting his jail reference as a red flag.

Danny claimed the line was simply a joke that failed to land.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the Englishman, 34, insisted that his 'bail me out of jail' comment in his vows was never meant to be taken seriously and said it was 'weird' watching the episode and seeing how strongly Bec reacted in the moment

'I obviously meant it as a joke,' he said.

'The seriousness in it was more like Bonnie and Clyde have each other's backs.'

He insisted he never blamed Bec for getting upset, admitting the pressure of the wedding day can warp how things are perceived.

'It's a stressful day. You probably haven't slept. Emotions are high. Stress is high and things can be perceived the wrong way,' he added.

Danny also defended his humour, suggesting it is a cultural difference rather than a sign of immaturity.

'Being from England, we are just cheekier. The comedy scene is massive… there's a lot of sarcasm. It's laugh or cry mentality and you've got to pick laugh every time,' he explained.

The groom also addressed Bec's concerns about his close friendship group, which included a well-known Magic Men performer among his groomsmen.

Danny admitted he understood why Bec was rattled when she saw his entourage at the altar.

'The girls instantly think you're a stripper or you're a party boy. But that's my job to show Bec that I'm not,' he said.

'I don't blame her. If I turned up and she was there with a load of people who made her look a certain kind of way, maybe I'd think the same.'

Danny also revealed he did not initially seek out the show, claiming producers approached him and he agreed to a chat, thinking nothing would come of it.

'I never thought in a million years I'd do it. But it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience and if I could walk away with love, that was the icing on the cake,' he said.

He admitted the sudden spotlight has been confronting since the first episode aired, saying he now feels 'weird' being recognised in public.

While Danny appeared loved-up with Bec after the wedding, cracks emerged on their honeymoon when he admitted he felt the sexual chemistry was lacking.

The confession devastated Bec, who later said she felt judged on her looks and 'friend-zoned' immediately after intimacy.

Danny has insisted that the interpretation is wrong.

'I didn't say there's no connection. What I said was our sexual chemistry is low,' he said.

'If I was to lie to Bec… you might spare her feelings in that moment, but in the long run she's going to be more hurt,' he said

He claimed his brutal honesty was meant to help her, not humiliate her, and argued that lying would have only caused greater pain later.

'If I was to lie to Bec… you might spare her feelings in that moment, but in the long run she's going to be more hurt,' he insisted.

Danny added that their relationship had 'so many positives' at the time and the chemistry concern was the only issue he believed they needed to work through.

He also suggested the show's edit has focused heavily on the awkward parts, despite their honeymoon having plenty of good moments.

'We had some really good days and really good moments,' he said.

'But the only bit I've seen so far is us talking about the lack of chemistry, where it looks like I friend-zoned Bec - and that wasn't the way it was.'

Asked who he bonded with at the Bucks night, Danny rattled off several names, including Steven, Filip, Scott and controversial groom Chris Nield.

He went on to praise Chris for 'stirring it up' when the other grooms were playing it safe.

'I liked it when Chris came in and stirred it,' Danny admitted.

'The boys were playing it a little bit safe and then you just get Chris come in not holding back. That was refreshing.'

As for what viewers can expect from his relationship with Bec going forward, Danny promised the pair were 'raw and honest' and insisted they threw everything at the experiment.

'There were tough times, there were amazing times, but we gave it everything we had,' he said.

'I'm proud of us both for that,' he said.

And when asked if he was worried about being portrayed as a villain, Danny was blunt.

'No, not really, because I was just myself,' he said.

'If I'm a villain, I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.'

Married At First Sight continues Thursday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine.
