Madonna's longtime pal Debi Mazar looks disgusted by her and Charli XCX's cigarette smoke at PFW show

They've been close pals with a friendship going back more than 40 years.

But Madonna's confidant Debi Mazar looked less than thrilled with the Material Girl when she and her younger buddy Charli XCX decided to light up in the front row at the Saint Laurent fashion show in Paris on Tuesday.

In a video posted on Instagram by Perfect Magazine, Madonna, 67, and Charli XCX, 33, both lit up black cigarettes while sitting between Mazar, 61, and Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie, 26, at the Paris Fashion Week event.

The act may have just been to satisfy a photographer, who could be heard off-camera as he instructed the two singers to cross their legs and make specific poses while taking a puff.

But as the Material Girl and Charli both exhaled large plumes of smoke, Mazar wrinkled her nose in disgust.

'Ugh!' she exclaimed as she tried to fan away the smoke with her hand, before turning to Charli to ask, 'Are those cloves?'

Mazar (R) has been friends with Madonna going back to the early 1980s; they're pictured with Bianca Hunter (L) in the music video for Papa Don't Preach (1986)

Off to the side, another woman could be heard joking, 'Debi just wants a real cig.'

As soon as the photographer signaled he was done shooting, both Madonna and Charli (real name: Charlotte Aitchison) put down the cigarettes as if they were finished.

Afterward, Mazar – who was joined at the fashion show by her lookalike daughter Evelina – jumped into the comments on the Instagram post to clarify her disgusted reaction.

'Gross CLOVE cigs..Hence my reaction 😂,' she wrote.

Unlike regular cigarettes, clove cigarettes (which are also known as kreteks) contain less tobacco and mix it with clove buds and oil, while additional spices are sometimes added to shape their divisive aroma.

Clove cigarettes – which are banned in the US under a 2009 law – are sometimes represented as being less dangerous than regular cigarettes due to the decreased amount of tobacco, but in reality they have similar risks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared to regular cigarettes, cloves have higher levels of tar, a major carcinogen found in cigarettes, as well as carbon monoxide and addictive nicotine.

Mazar got plenty of support in the comments from other fans who weren't impressed by Madonna and Charli's display.

Charli and Madonna exchanged an affectionate hug and touched cheeks before sitting down next to each other

'Debbie was so real kkkkk [sic],' wrote one approving fan, while another added, 'Debbie is not enjoying any of this nonsense [sic]!'

Other commenters were turned off by their smoking and connected it to societal issues.

'Smoking is déclassé,' opined one Instagram user.

Another suggested that they were worried about a perceived increase in displays of smoking from celebrities and the possible influence it might have.

'the push for cigarettes recently is umm, interesting,' they noted.

But Madonna and Charli also had a few defenders in the comments who wanted them to be able to smoke wherever they felt like, regardless of whoever else had to breathe in their exhaust.

'People in the comments are so boring,' began one contrarian. 'The world is at war, fascism is infiltrating every government, we are consuming microplastics – let these divas smoke in peace!'

Mazar's connection to Madonna (born Madonna Ciccone) goes back to the early 1980s, when the two met while Mazar was working at the influential nightclub Danceteria,

Mazar met Madonna in the early '80s while working at the NYC nightclub Danceteria. She went on to cover makeup on Madonna's first music video in 1982, before appearing in several subsequent videos; pictured together in 1988 in NYC

The club went on to serve as a location for the 1985 comedy classic Desperately Seeking Susan, which Madonna costarred in with Rosanna Arquette.

Mazar and Madonna's friendship turned into a professional collaboration when the rising singer hired her pal to be a makeup artist on her first-ever music video for her 1982 single Everybody.

Mazar later became an on-screen fixture with her friend in several of Madonna's most popular music videos for songs including Papa Don't Preach, True Blue, Justify My Love and Music, with their most recent video collaboration arriving this year with the appropriately titled Danceteria.

As Madonna increased her profile outside of the music industry as an actress, Mazar also began to define herself as a prolific supporting player.

She scored small but influential roles in classics including Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, Oliver Stone's The Doors, Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway, Michael Mann's Collateral, and Spike Lee's films Jungle Fever, Malcolm X and Girl 6, among numerous other movie roles.

Mazar expanded into TV when she joined the main cast of LA Law in 1993, and she scored her biggest role to date when she played Shauna Roberts on HBO's Entourage.
