But that’s not how most of the world saw the song. Even though the track was a hit single and received mostly positive critical reviews, much of the public attention around it focused on its surface-level sexuality and heavy innuendos rather than on its meaning—even though its emotional message is made quite obvious in the lyrics. Even a Billboard critic fundamentally misunderstood it as a song about “purity and sex,” while several other publications called it immature.

Madonna’s 1984 MTV Performance of “Like a Virgin” Is Even More Legendary Than the Song Itself

Perhaps even more legendary than the song itself is Madonna’s performance of it at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1984. Madonna opened the show, emerging from a 17-foot wedding cake, donning a white wedding dress, lace fingerless gloves (a typical 1980s accessory), and rosaries (a stylistic choice that often put her at odds with religious groups, including the Vatican itself). In classic Madonna fashion, her dress included a bustier and a belt buckle that read “Boy Toy.”

To add to her theatrics, Madonna confessed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that early in her performance, her white stiletto pumps fell off. Consequently, she fell onto the stage and her dress flipped up, exposing her rear end. “Those were the days when you shouldn’t show your butt to have a career—now it’s the opposite,” she joked to Fallon. “I didn’t even know my butt was showing.”

As a result, her then-manager, Freddy DeMann, was convinced that her career was over. The pop star recalled, “He was white as a ghost. He was very disappointed in me, because I was rolling around on the floor, my dress went up, and you could see my underpants. What was I thinking? ...It was scary and fun, and I didn’t know what it meant for my future.”

However, it was this botched performance that catapulted Madonna into the stratosphere of artistic renown. The most unintentional, controversial aspects of her performance were the very details that challenged prevailing mores around art, public decency, and the expression of female sexuality. And the public responded positively: “Like a Virgin” quickly became Madonna’s first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

MTV itself even recognized the importance of Madonna’ s performance, calling it “one of the most important and most unforgettable VMA performances ever, if not one of the most iconic pop performances of all time.” Indeed, without Madonna ushering in such a strong, much-needed cultural shift, it’s hard to imagine the success of later artists like Britney Spears, Cardi B, and Sabrina Carpenter, all of whom carry the torch of Madonna’s legacy. Catchy and well-sung, deceptively deep and packed with clever double entendres, “Like a Virgin” remains fresh and relevant even today.
