EXCLUSIVE: Comedy film O Horizon, starring Maria Bakalova (The Apprentice) and David Strathairn (Nomadland) will be released theatrically this June by Variance films. The film is written and directed by Madaleine Rotzler.
After its debut in New York on June 12, the film will have a platform rollout in Los Angeles and additional markets from June 19 into July.
O Horizon centers Abby (Bakalova), a young neuroscientist navigating an exhilarating new romance and a groundbreaking career discovery amidst the recent loss of her father (Strathairn). Her life then turns upside down when an emerging technology suddenly allows her to speak with him again. Rotzler’s magical realist tale tackles themes of relationships amid rapidly evolving technologies.
The film had its world premiere at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festiva, where it won the Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema.
“In 2020, I started writing about a world that I thought of as an alternate reality,” Rotzler said. “Just a few years later, it’s hardly alternative at all, which is a big reason I am excited for people to put away their screens and come experience this film together with strangers in a cool, dark room.
In addition to Bakalova and Strathairn, O Horizon also stars Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Maggie Grace (Taken), Avi Nash (The Walking Dead and Paulina Porizkova (Wedding Bell Blues). The film is produced by Rotzler, Paul Nelson, Audry Tomassini and Joseph Cross with Mark Gill serving as executive producer.
