M. Night Shyamalan's newest movie just became a Netflix sensation.
Shyamalan's underrated thriller that earned $83 million at the box office scores a global revival on Netflix. Shyamalan's movies have garnered mixed reception throughout his career. This has included critical acclaim for films like Unbreakable and The Visit, alongside less well-received ventures like The Happening and Knock at the Cabin. Even so, he continues crafting thrilling, unique stories.
His latest is 2024's Trap, starring Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a father taking his daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue), to a concert of her favorite singer, Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan). Unbeknownst to everyone, Cooper is the serial killer "the Butcher." He soon learns the concert is a trap set by the FBI to find out who he is and catch him.
Now, FlixPatrol reports that Trap has become a streaming hit on Netflix, with the movie sitting at Number 10 on the platform as of January 26, 2026. According to data, the movie is Number 1 in Canada, while also sitting at Number 2 in two countries: the Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The newest of Shyamalan's movies, reviews for Trap were mixed for both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, the thriller sits at 56% with critics based on 250 reviews, while sporting a 64% from audiences based on over 2,500 verified reviews. While the cast of Trap earned praise, the story was considered farfetched with an inconsistent tone.
However, the movie was still a success at the box office: Trap earned $83.6 million against a $30 million budget, likely making a moderate profit. Its success on streaming worldwide appears to reflect this interest, sneaking onto Netflix's Top 10 thanks to a number of dedicated international countries where the movie is available.
Trap is not available on Netflix in the US; instead, it's viewable via HBO Max. This emphasizes how its worldwide success comes from a place of global attention. Its success also comes ahead of Shyamalan's next movie Remain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, scheduled for theatrical release on October 23, 2026.
With Trap proving itself a global sensation, Shyamalan's movies continue to emphasize how much pull they have, even after their theatrical releases. Even though the movie isn't considered one of his best, the engaging story it tells and the unique twists that unfold throughout make it a standout among all the movies that he's made across his career.
