South London viral sensation Lola Young became a first-time Grammy winner with her smash hit “Messy,” which was nominated against a stacked category for Best Pop Solo Performance tonight at the 68th annual Grammy Awards. The self-described “big mouth” artist aptly hadn’t prepared a speech for the unexpected win, with an enthusiastic F-bomb slipping past CBS censors on YouTube TV as she accepted the golden gramophone.
“Sorry, sorry, sorry! It’s messy, you know what I mean?” she continued, briefly freezing up and profusely apologizing. The censors had initially bleeped out the beginning of her expletive-laden acceptance, before missing a later one.
In the room, the adorable moment played with delighted laughs (see: Addison Rae below), as the crowd celebrated the singer-songwriter’s inaugural triumph.
Deadline has reached out to CBS for comment on the matter, which may or may not incur an FCC fine.
Young’s competitors in the category were Justin Bieber (“Daisies”), Lady Gaga (“Disease”), Sabrina Carpenter (“Manchild”) and Chappell Roan (“The Subway”). She had also been nominated this evening in the Best New Artist category, though that award went to fellow Brit Olivia Dean.
Earlier in the evening, Young performed a moving rendition of her now-Grammy-winning track, which brought visible tears to viewers’ eyes. Accompanied by a grand black piano, the performance marked Young’s high-profile return to the stage after a Fall 2025 health scare during which she collapsed mid-song.
In general, it seemed to be an expletive-laden night — as Carpenter was bleeped during her early night performance of “Manchild.” Later, Billie Eilish’s acceptance of Song of the Year (for “Wildflower”) was also censored as the artist took a stand, saying “Fuck ICE.”
