Australian author and husband of TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson Peter FitzSimons has raised eyebrows with his latest Sydney Morning Herald article.
In it, the former Rugby player, 63, took readers back to the summer of 1985, recalling a journey across Africa filled with romance, danger, and a strange 'erotic dream' that left readers baffled.
The tale begins with Debbie, a 19-year-old South African woman who stole FitzSimons' heart while he was playing rugby in Italy.
Their passionate connection was so strong that he abandoned his return to Australia and embarked on a dangerous 10-week trek across Africa, risking everything just to see her again.
'Instead of returning to Australia, I decided to travel across the African continent to meet up with her and hopefully have a few more precious weeks in her fragrant company,' he wrote.
But the story quickly took a turn into erotic fiction territory, with the journalist recounting a sexual dream he had Uganda while traveling through the country with 'Somali truck drivers'.

'On our last night before Kenya I awake to find the erotic dream I am having has as its foundation an African woman [the truck drivers] had brought back for me, now beaming at me in the moonlight,' wrote FitzSimons.
'I am aghast! But that's another story...' he added.
The bizarre incident was just one of the many twists in FitzSimons' bawdy journey.
Traveling through war-torn regions, he faced rebel roadblocks where soldiers demanded bribes, encountered life-threatening situations in Zimbabwe and was robbed in Tanzania by a thief he joked 'could run faster than Carl Lewis.'
The article balanced the raw and racy moments with the surreal and dangerous, painting a picture of a young man chasing love and finding himself caught in a whirlwind of culture, conflict and curiosity.
However, rather than provide any details of his relationship with Debbie, the story abruptly ends after their reunion in South Africa, with the columnist simply revealing 'things do not go well from there'.
FitzSimons' article then descends into inscrutable Bob Dylan lyrics from his songs Don't Think Twice, It's All Right and and I Shall Be Released.

Reflecting on the bawdy adventure, FitzSimons said it was like living in a trippy Bob Dylan song
The story also opens with with lyrics by the American folk singer.
FitzSimons’ bold and unapologetic piece is just the latest from the outspoken journalist who has developed a reputation for always speaking his mind.
His spicy tale provided a shock insight into his life before he married veteran TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson in 1992.
The pair share three adult children, Jake, 29, Louis, 27 and Billi, 25.
In September, the embattled television star shared a post to Instagram in which she enjoyed a fancy lunch date with Peter.

She wrote in the caption: 'Happy Father’s Day to my favourite dad. Our absolute rock.'
Lisa previously expressed her joy in 'defying the people who said they wouldn't last' after they walked down the aisle in 1992 nine months after they first met.
'When Pete and I met way back at Xmas in 1991, there were many - including my sweet, protective mum - who said we wouldn't last,' she revealed on Instagram.
'We are still defying those who thought we wouldn't make it.'
