EXCLUSIVE: Li Jin Hao is the latest comedian to join Glen Powell in a new original untitled comedy at Universal that Judd Apatow is on board to direct. Apatow and Powell co-wrote the pic, and Cristin Milioti and Madelyn Cline also recently joined the cast.
The film, in which Powell plays a country-western star in free-fall, has been set for release on February 5, 2027.
Apatow will produce through his longstanding Apatow Productions overall deal with the studio, and Powell and Dan Cohen will produce through Barnstorm’s first-look deal. Kevin Misher will produce through Misher Films. Universal Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project.
A UK-based comedian, writer, and performer, Li was born in China and raised in Singapore, where he served in the Singapore Army before moving to Scotland to study at St. Andrews. He was a finalist for both the BBC New Comedy Awards 2023 and Chortle Student Comedian of the Year 2022 before going to Edinburgh Fringe in 2024 with his debut hour, Swimming in a Submarine. He ran at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and lead him to a Best Newcomer nomination and widespread critical acclaim. After the film wraps, he will return to the Edinburgh Fringe later this summer with a new hour.
Li is represented by WME and Individual Artist Management.
