This year has already been an outstanding year for fans of The Legend of Zelda. With the franchise celebrating its 40th Anniversary, we've been gifted with a slew of new content, remastered oldies and announcements that would make even a Goron shed a rocky tear. But the biggest (literally and figuratively) is yet to come. In fact, fans of Link and Zelda might just be getting the single biggest thing to ever happen to the franchise in 2027.

A quick glance at the IMAX blockbuster slate for 2027 shows that the upcoming movie of The Legend of Zelda will indeed be launching in IMAX. Big news indeed. Any fans wanting to see their beloved character come to life on screen can now go see it in the best and biggest format possible. A larger-than-life Link atop Epona and galloping across our large movie screens will soon be a reality in 2027.

With so many new and old Zelda properties getting some love this year, it feels like getting the movie to cap things off next year is the cherry on the cake. We've already seen confirmation of an Ocarina of Time remake and, thanks to some dedicated and talented fans, we even have a PC port of Twilight Princess coming soon, which will be known as Courage Reborn. There's simply never been a better time to be a Zelda fan.

Information on the movie is a little scant at the moment. Bar a few screenshots, we know precious little about the project. Some fans have noted that the costumes and overall visuals are a mish mash of art styles from different The Legend of Zelda games. Link's costume, in particular, looks like it was pulled from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, whereas the landscapes looked like they were pulled straight from a Lord of the Rings movie.

The set images reveal a game accurate design for Link, but apart from that, we're pretty much in the dark about storyline or additional characters. With Wes Ball in the director's chair and involvement from the infamous Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, it feels like the movie might be in safe hands. And with over forty years of lore and adventures to pull from, there is a wealth of stellar stories that they could base the movie on, or perhaps build a brand-new adventure we've not seen before.

The Legend of Zelda movie is due to release on May 7th 2027, which is almost one year away. It would be nice to see a trailer or two in the upcoming months. Here's hoping the finished movie is nothing like the other famous live action Nintendo movie. Anyone old enough to remember the disastrous Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 will be hoping for a lot more. The Legend of Zelda in IMAX has a very low bar to clear, but hopefully it aims higher than the sky islands.
